?? Hutchinson

This is a bit of a long shot but I'm trying to find the identity of the father of my half-uncle.

Charlie Burrows was born in September 1923 and his mother Ivy was my paternal grandma.

The family story goes that Ivy's father was so against the pregnancy/child and believed the father to be a dead beat and purchased a 1 way ticket to Australia for him, which he took.

The Burrows family were residents of a cottage in Woad Lane, Long Sutton, Lincs. Ivy was born in October 1903.

We know that the father's surname was Hutchinson (or spellings thereof) and that he went to Australia sometime either after discovering Ivy was pregnant or shortly after Charlie's birth. So we are looking at a potential emigration between Mar/April 1923 and December 1923 maybe a little later.

We also believe that Hutchison did quite well in Australia and had 3 children, 2 boys and 1 girl. We think the girl was called Joan and the boys became a farmer and a police officer.

We don't know when or where Hutchinson was born but assume that probably somewhere in the Holbeach area and potentially give or take 5 years either side of 1903, when Ivy was born.

I've tried to search passenger lists but not having any luck. I've started a search through Hutchinsons born in the area and then trying to trace what happened to them to eliminate those boys.

Any help would be much appreciated.

"Charlie Burrows"

Didn't you check his full christian names using GRO online?  Unless Fred is a family name - father may have been Fred Hutchinson

Charles Fred Hutchinson Burrows

Are there any likely candidates in the 1921 census in the same area as your grandmother?

As suggested above family names?
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

I couldn't actually find the GRO entry when I searched but came across the birth record for him.

I am in contact with Charlie's granddaughter so she knew his full name and also knew Charlie's fathers surname but Charlie was never told his first name. The Fred I believe comes from Ivy's father's name as he was Frederick Burroughs. He was an extremely strict man and it was his way or no way.

Freddy, as he was known would not let my grandad adopt Charlie when he married Ivy. My grandad Harry tried his hardest to adopt him to get him away from "that man" but Freddy would not allow it. Ivy was only allowed to see her son at weekends and on other days if Freddy deemed Charlie had worked hard enough. To all intents he was a very cruel man.

I'm slowly working through them, but so far all the boys of a similar age to my grandmother are all traceable until their marriages, 1939 register and deaths.

Charles Hutchinson aged 22 left England for Freemantle 18.12.1923

Does his address make any sense - I can't relate it fully to Lincs but there is a Long Sutton in Spalding

Yes, Charles Hutchinson seems to be the one, so I guess Ivy gave her baby son his Father's Christian name. Charles born Qudring, Lincs 1901. Father Joseph, Mother Emma, siblings Joseph, Thomas, Arthur, Walter, Jack. Went to Freemantle, Western Australia 18/12/1923.
Regards.
