Thanks one and all. Since I originally posted this morning I had found the two children together in the workhouse, which sort of 'proved' that they were siblings, and now I have the marriage certificate, so the case is proven. Thank you very much. The story has a happy ending for Mary Ann. She and Samuel Calver emigrated to Alberta and she lived to a ripe old age.
Her brother Benjamin also went, some years later, to Canada and then on to California. His wife Georgiana seems however to have died in Essex. I am not sure why.
I still haven't found her birth record, I have searched the GRO index with numerous permutations.

It would appear that Benjamin and his wife were together until her death in 1936, he then sailed for Canada in 1936 aged 76. His address was Glencon, Kintshier Road, Thundersley, Essex.

He then sailed again from the UK aged 79 to the US in 1938, his address at the time 17, Woodlight Ave, High Rd,Vange, Essex

Hello again
Whilst I have your Conner attention, could you maybe help me with something else??
Mary Ann's mother. Also Mary Ann.
George Conner married Mary Ann Smith in St Leonard's, Shoreditch on Nov 30th 1856.
In 1861 census they are in Congleton in Cheshire with their two children Benjamin and Mary Ann (aged 3 & 1 respectively). I cannot find Mary Ann's birth still but am assuming Bethnal Green. Benjamin was born there in 1859.
In March 1867 both children are admitted to Poplar workhouse.
Father George remarries, as a widower, in Manchester in May 1867.
So, Mary Ann Conner, nee Smith, dies sometime between April 1861 and March 1867.
But where?
Again, I have tried various permutations of names - Mary, Maryann etc and Conner and Connor - but to no avail. the detail doesn't change the story, but I don't like loose ends!

It was not unusual for births not to be registered in the earlier years of registration so it is likely that there is no registration for Mary Ann
