Gerrard Street, Islington

Hi all

 I have an ancestor, George Phelps born 10 September 1858, at Islington Workhouse (according to the birth certificate). His (unmarried) mother gives a residential address of 45 Gerrard Street.

On his baptism entry in October 1858 it says his mothers abode is the Poor House.

My query is - where is Gerrard Street? Is it the address of the workhouse/poor house? Or where is it in relation to the workhouse?

After many years, it looks like I've found this elusive ancestor.

Georges baptism gives his abode as Work House and his mothers profession as 'Poor'

Mother Jane (27) was admitted to the workhouse 2 August 1858 where she gave birth to an illegitimate male child in September. Her address was 43 Parkfield St

Jane and George were discharged 26th October and passed to their legal settlements, which appears to be Southampton

I've found an index to the orders of removal which show she was sent to Mattingley St, Hazeley, which seems to be between Basingstoke and Aldershot, rather than Southampton

I had seen the discharge entry but was unaware of the removal order which sounds a promising lead to follow up. I ought to check out the Parkfield address too

I noticed on the  discharge entry there is a Matilda Shefford also discharged to the same place.

From the same records of removal as I found the Hazeley address I can see Matilda Shefford was removed to Yateley. Perhaps all three were sent via Southampton workhouse as a central place for the Hampshire county poor law administrators to process them
