As though maintenance would be scheduled on New Years Day -- a holiday around the world, and always a busy day in the past for using Ancestry. And they have the cheek to end their banner warning with Thank you for your patience

As it happens I received a message today, from a new contact in Canada, and have been trying to reply this afternoon.  I've been thrown off twice, everything went black, but when I got back in nothing was lost except a couple of () had been replaced by strings of characters.  Sigh of relief.
