Ever heard of a place called Gomos?

I'm looking at 1901 census for the Lewis Family at 31 Avondale, Ystradyfodwg in the Rhondda Valley.
District 27, Ystradyfodwg, Glamorgan.

One William John Lewis is said to have been born in "Montgomery, Gomos" but I can't find such a place!

Familysearch have it transcribed as Conws, Montgomeryshire. Transcription on familysearch is probably from findmypast.

I read it as Gornus but I don't think that exists. The enumerator seems to have changed his C to a G, I wonder if he has misread his notes as well? (Caersws?)
The next person down, Vaughan Owen is also born there, and the best fitting birth for him is in 4th Qtr 1859 in Newtown Registration District. (Carno is in that district)

Vaughan Owen is on 1891 as b Llandinam, Montgomery but living in the parish of Gwnnws Lower in Ceredigion
