Death of my grandmothers sister.
« on: Sunday 29 December 24 17:32 GMT (UK) »
Hi, my late grandmothers sister Mary Flett Bews Hamilton (Hamilton is her Surname)was born in Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland in 1890.

She died possibly 1965 in Elmswell, Bury St. Edmunds.

I can find no record of a husband. I was told she had a son named Arthur Hamilton. I have no additional information.

Advice on where to search for further information please.

kind regards
Thomas Owen

Hi Thomas,

The only death record I can find for your great aunt in Bury St Edmonds is this one:

Mary Hamilton
Quarter 1 1974
Born 3rd March 1890
Bury St Edmonds
Volume 4b
Page 3384

If you order this death certificate through the GRO, her son Arthur may well be the informant if there's no husband. You would have to order a paper copy for a death certificate in 1974.

I can't seem to find a will or probate for her.

Think  that could be her - birth cert records her birth as 3rd March 1890, Greenock

By 1904 both of Mary's parents had passed away. Have you found her on 1911/21 census in Scotland. Her sister Helen married 1918, was Mary a witness to her sister's marriage.

Yes SS, Helen Clarke ms Hamilton. was my gran.
I am aware of that side of the family history.
I had been told Mary FB Hamilton had died in England possibly 1965. It was believed she had never married and had one son called Arthur, however I can't confirm any of that.

Regards
Thomas

It was another sister called Margaret who was a witness at Helens marriage to Thomas Clarke in 1918.

SS, I can find no record for my Mary Hamilton in the 1911 or 1921 census records on SP.

Perhaps she had already moved out of Scotland?
