St Decumans Church.Parish Records?
« on: Tuesday 13 September 05 23:41 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Does anyone know where the parish records are kept for St Decumans Church,Williton,Somerset.
I am going to visit Watchet soon, and would like to see the church, where my g.g.grandparents were married, also my grandmother was christened there.

Silly question next,
if a person was drowned at sea, would there be some kind of plaque?stone?
to denote this,I know there wouldnt be a grave, but perhaps some acknowledgement of this event.

Have searched for this death, but to no avail,on record,
the only mention of his death is in a book,
Tales of Watchet Harbour, the story about Captain William Webber, and the ship Kelso, was in a storm, and the ship went down in the Bristol channel,
in January ,
hope someone can help

regards
Bennett

Hi Bennett,

Unfortunately I can't help you with your questions but I have just discovered the Webber family from St Decumans in my family tree  :)
I would be really interested to know who your G. G. Grandparents were?

Gilbert Webber 1846 was married to a Mary Ann Bryant 1847 who was the sister of my Grt Grt Grandmother Harriet Bryant 1850 who married Thomas Vickery 1850 long winded but I got there  ;)

Good Luck in your search

Hi Kim,
Thanks for your message.
There are a lot of Webber's in Somerset, its also quite a common surname,
I don't know who my g.g.grandparents were yet, but my g.grandparents, are listed in previous message.

William Webber b.1850
Louisa Webber  b.1854 (nee) Strong,

could be some connection along the line, there are so many Webber's,with all different branches and twigs.

Haven't come across a Gilbert Webber yet,
do you have an address for yours?

regards
Bennett

Hi Bennett,

In the 1861 census Gilbert lived with:-

In the 1881 census he lived with his wife and 5 children at:- 8 Lower Folly, St Decumans Watchet, Somerset.  They had another child but he was living with his grandparents at the time of the census.

I'm sure there is a connection somewhere, its finding it  ;)

Of course you may have all this info.  I'll try and find out what William's mothers name was.

Still no connection yet  ;)

Kim

P.S. William's mother's maiden name was Hobbs she married his father in June 1853 Wiliton.

Hi Kim,
Sorry I'm late getting back to you, been out all day, this evening had visitors.
I couldn't wait to check my emails.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What can I say, thank you for the great info, its fantastic news,
you have given me the names of my g.g.grandparents,its seems so strange reading this.

As for Williams mothers maiden name Hobbs, thats a double WOW!!!!!!!!!

The addresses are a bit of a coincidence,as families used to live quite near to each other in those days.
Do you think there is a possibility of a connection?
Where do we go from here?

Bennett

Hi Bennett,

I do think there is a connection its finding it  ???  You could send for William's parents marriage certificate this would give you the names of their fathers.

I've requested certificates a couple of times for that little bit of extra info  ;)

Do you use GenesReunited?  I have made a couple of connections through there.  I haven't had chance to look for Webber connections yet.

I'd be happy to help if you decide to request the certificate  ;D

Hi Kim,
Yes I think it would be a good idea to try and obtain the marriage cert,
Which record office would it be for this area?

There are Webber's living in Quay St.Minehead, some are mine, also a Webber family living at 13 Lower Folly, and 16 Lower Folly,2 Higher Folly.

I am beginning to think the Webber surname is just as common as Smith or Jones,or Brown. No offense to others with those in their tree.
Must admit I do have Brown and Smith, grrrrrrrrrrrrr.

As you say there is a strong possibility of a connection, but so many Webber's
branching off, whose to say who they belong to.
I think we will have to really start at the beginning.
Interesting to say the least.

Bennett
