WW2 RAF Service Records Question on Trade
« on: Saturday 28 December 24 13:36 GMT (UK) »
I received my grandfather's WW2 RAF service records. I have found searching this forum to be very useful for abbreviations etc. so thanks for all that contribute!

It's interesting that some areas were redacted that I might not have expected—Good Conduct Badges and Time Forfeited are two, and Civil Occupation is another.

In unraveling his service record, it seems he may have been both a leading aircraftsman and service policeman. I have attached some extracts from the record. Am I correct in this assessment?

In Mustering, I interpret the on-entry assignment ACH/S.P. as Air Craft Hand/Service Police, with a rank of AC1/A Cpl—Aircraftsman 1st Class/Acting Corporal. The qualifications seem to support this with courses and training. I am not sure a 47% is a pass (maybe he failed??). I don't know what A/C/U is in his promotions. It's at the same time as the AC1 listing.

Also, for some reason after the CNS listing  in his record his assignments were redacted. Any idea why?

Trade or Mustering is the two columns Auth and Description with Date of Effect.
This is the date of a trade change and its description. Note trade title may not have changed but he may have changed trade group due to experience (significance is pay change)

The next series of columns are Character and Proficiency assessments and were carried out every year on 31st Dec or on a significant trade change.

the AC1/Cpl was his classification/rank just over a year after entry - not on entry.

Service Police/Provost were different from other trades in that they rose from AC2 to AC1 in the normal way of time progession that all AC2 did in the RAF. SP were appointed to Cpl Rank on passing trade basic training. You see that on May 41 when he was an AC2 before basic then after basic AC1 and rank noted as A/C/U Acting Corporal Unpaid.

So paid as every AC2 then every AC1 with authority of Cpl and small pay adjustment for trade rank.

Typically two redacted lines on a service record is a period of hospital admittance and treatment.

Thanks - that explains what I am seeing!

I never met him and from what I understand he died in his 50s not long after I was born. I have some propaganda leaflets he supposedly brought back from Burma, with translations. Interesting reading!
