Buchanan help required
« on: Friday 27 December 24 16:23 GMT (UK) »
Good Afternoon all,
Hoping that someone can help in this brick wall. Here is what i have so far;

Robert Buchanan - DoB NK DoD 1842 Glasgow.
He married  Maria Elizabeth Briggs DoB NK, DoD NK. They had 5 children

Catherine Elizabeth Buchanan DoB NK DoD 1848 in Glasgow, cannot find DoB and where she was born.

William Buchanan DoB Mar 1825 St Thomas County, Virgin Islands (US) DoD NK

Maria Elizabeth Buchanan DoB Feb 1828 St Thomas County, Virgin Islands (US), USA
DoD11 Jun 1909 Liverpool, Lancashire, England

Ann Elizabeth Buchanan DoB 31 Mar 1829 St. Thomas, Virgin Islands (US), USA
DoD 14 Aug 1864 Southport, Lancashire, England

Robert Buchanan DoB 26 Apr 1831 Barony, Lanark, Lanarkshire, Scotland

The main sticking point is trying to find Maria Elizabeth Briggs DoB, where born and when and where married. Also details of their first child Catherine Elizabeth Buchanan, when and where born.

Tried many search criteria but with no luck so far. Just asking if anyone could shed some light on the problems and maybe point me in the right direction or find some details.

Many thanks for all your time and efforts.

I think you need to check the info you have given & also include the source of that info as there appears to be a number of discrepancies

No Robert Buchanan death in Glasgow in 1842 - where did you get that info?  The only one is in Midlothian

If he died 1842 you should be able to find him on the 1841 census which will give an idea of his birthyear & whether he was born in county

No Maria Buchanan death in Liverpool in 1909 - a Maria Elizabeth WILSON died 1909 Liverpool.  Have you traced her back through the censuses & found her marriage?  1901 shows b West Indies

No Catherine Elizabeth Buchanan death in Glasgow in 1848

Robert Buchanan jnr was b 14.5.1831 per SP

You may want to have a look on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk to check the info above

Sone general information

It looks like there should be church records retained, not birth certificates as such.  It seems like a lot of the records now should be on microfilm with the LDS.

Alexander Buchanan and Catherine Elizabeth Buchanan seem to have had at least one child, whose baptism is recorded twice. See screenshot.

The IGI gives her name as Catherine Elizabeth Grace and birth date 16 November 1846.

I have yet to find her in the 1851 census, unless she is the four-year-old boarder, born Scotland, in the household of Henry Hugh Courtenay, Rector of Mamhead, in the Parsonage, Mamhead, Devon.

She's still there in 1861, listed as Catherine E G Buchanan, so it looks as if it must be her.

She married, in London in 1869, John Baillie Baillie-Hamilton. In a newspaper marriage notice she is described as 'of Arnprior'.

The current chief of Clan Buchanan is John Michael Baillie-Hamilton Buchanan.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Good Morning All,
Thank you for all your feedback, I used their maiden names at the start, i knew about the Wilson marriage and have all the details. Ann Elizabeth did not marry. I also have the marriage of Catherine Elizabeth Buchanan to Alexander Buchanan etc.

The main person who i cannot find anything about is the correct details for Robert Buchanan and his wife Maria Elizabeth Briggs.
I will visit the weblinks again, just in case i missed something.
Many thanks
Mike
