Entry in baptism records for baseborn child
« on: Monday 23 December 24 12:16 GMT (UK) »
'My' Sarah Baxter married at Nonnington in Kent in 1800 and I am looking for her baptism around 1760  and came across the following entry (FindMyPast) in the baptism records for Wingham (5 mi from Nonnington) :

'June 30th 1862 Sarah Baxter baseborn daug. of ___________  Jarvis'

I'm not sure how to interpret this as thought baseborn child would take mother's name? Is Jarvis a clue to father's name but then mother's name not actually stated?   Jarvis and Baxter are both surnames that feature in the parish records of Wingham.

Help appreciated
and Happy Christmas!

Sorry to mislead, my mistake entirely but I meant to type looking for birth around 1780 (marriage was 1800) and the entry at Wingham for baseborn daughter is dated  1782 not 1762 ...

Maybe the Sarah Baxter born 1760 was the mother of baseborn Sarah?

The census shows Sarah's birth in Stelling around 1781.
If she was "of age" when she married in 1800, she may have been born earlier than that. What exactly is on the marriage record?
Milligan - Jardine – Glencross – Dinwoodie - Brown: (Dumfriesshire & Kirkcudbrightshire)
Clark – Faulds – Cuthbertson – Bryson – Wilson: (Ayrshire & Renfrewshire)
Neale – Cater – Kinder - Harrison: (Warwickshire & Queensland)
Roberts - Spry: (Cornwall, Middlesex & Queensland)
Munster: (Schleswig-Holstein & Queensland) and Plate: (Braunschweig, Neubruck & Queensland & New York)

Baptisms only use first and middle names for the one being baptised.

For example, two entries above Sarah, there is John West, son of Richard and Elizabeth Hughes.  West would be his middle name.  If you flip through the pages, you will see more examples.

FindMyPast has two indexes done for Sarah's entry. One is done as Sarah Baxter, surname Jarvis.
However the second one is indexed as surname Baxter, possibly because it is odd the mother's first name appears to be unknown.

Thank you for making me look again at the marriage  (23.11.1800 at Nonnington) , so whilst no reference to age,  I have just noticed that one of  witnesses was a John Jarvis!

The other witness was Ann Foord who I assume is related to the  groom, Abraham Foord (from Eastry)  -  though his origins are a puzzle for another day!

I think my next step will be to look at John Jarvis and see if I can find any  connections.

I  just found it difficult to make sense of the baptism record, compared with entries for other baseborn children it was confusing as to whether Baxter or Jarvis was surname of mother or father.

Anyway, thank you, at least I now have another direction for my search!
