Pierce Power 1853
« on: Saturday 21 December 24 09:18 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I am looking for information on my GG Grandfather Pierce Francis Power. He married in London in 1884 and his marriage certificate had his fathers name as Patrick Power occupation Chandler?.
The family has always believed that Pierce came from County Waterford. Pierce did make an application at some stage to find information on his parents who were listed as Patrick and Margaret Power.

Its only guess work but these are the records that I have found that seem to match.

Patricius Power married Margaritam Hurly 12 Nov 1843 Ballybricken, County Waterford.
I believe these to be Pierce's parents as the only baptism record I could find that matched Pierce was as follows:
Piercem F Power Bapt 4th Oct 1853 County Tipperary, Parents Pat Power and Margaret Hurly.

Also found a sister I believe for Pierce-
Mariam C Power born 1850

Any information on any of the above persons would be gratefully received as we are really in the dark about our Irish ancestors and would so love to know more.

Yes, Patrick Power and Margaret Hurly did have a son Pierce F Power, baptized 4-10-1853.
But not in Co. Tipperary - don't know where OP got that from.

Here is link for the parish register of Trinity Without - City of Waterford.

Patrick Power and Margaret Hurly appear to have had at least 5 children, baptized in the parishes of Trinity Within and Trinity Without, Waterford City.
Joseph 1844
Michael Mark 1847
Thomas 1849
Mary C 1850, and
Pierce F in 1853.

fathers name as Patrick Power occupation Chandler?.
The family has always believed that Pierce came from County Waterford. Pierce did make an application at some stage to find information on his parents who were listed as Patrick and Margaret Power.

Two questions:
- Why the question mark on chandler? Is it that the original is difficult to read, or that you don't undersand what a chandler is?
- Also, how do you know that Pierce Power made an inquiry about his parents? What sort of enquiry, and to who?

Patricius Power married Margaritam Hurly 12 Nov 1843 Ballybricken, County Waterford.

Here is a link for the marriage. Took a while to find as it is recorded in error in the baptisms register, rather than marriages.

Ballybricken is officially Trinity Without. Where I was confirmed.

Hi,
Firstly thank you for the information you have provided. Answering a few of your questions.
The fathers profession on Pierce Francis Powers marriage certificate is hard to read, but I believe it is a Chandler. I believe that a chandler is a candle maker. Pierce worked as a fireman aboard Merchant vessels all his life.

Regarding the application it is from the national archives of Ireland.

Date of receipt: 12.10.21
Extract from Census return of 1851
Name of applicant: Pierce F Power (1854 1855)
Address: 56 Cotton Street, Poplar
Full name of Father and Mother of applicant: Patk and Margt Power
Residence 1851: Blank
The only other information written on the form is:
Birth certs of persons re no census > 1851

I'm not sure if Pierce wanted his birth certificate or he just wanted information on his parents. The link on the form takes me to the national Archives of Ireland, but there is no more information.

Regards Hannah
