Poppy/Dalby marriages Ipswich
« on: Monday 16 December 24 16:41 GMT (UK) »
I have a couple - Frederick Poppy and Matilda Dalby - who seem to have got married twice - once in 1854 and again in 1859 in Ipswich.

Before I pay for the two certificates, can anyone suggest why this might happen?

Because the names aren't very common, I don't think it's likely that it's two different couples.

Can you supply an 1854 reference. Found 1859 no trouble.

They appear to have had 4 children before 1859 - is the supposition of an 1854 marriage based on that?

Frederick James 1854
William James 1855
Henry 1857
Matilda Jane 1858

Sorry for the delay in getting back to this - my health is very variable and some days my brain function isn't up to writing replies.

I can't find the 1854 one now, either.

I've had it for some time (Mar qr 1854 Ipswich 4a 523) and it fit with Matilda's children - her first two were registered with her surname but the third, Frederick James, born 7 Jan 1854 was registered and baptised with the Poppy surname.

Frederick was followed by William, Henry and Matilda - all registered with the surname Poppy.  All were born before the 1859 marriage.

The birth of Frederick James Poppy was registered with that GRO reference in 1854 (no marriages on page 523 in Ipswich district).

Thank you for solving the issue!

I must have filled in the info in the wrong cell on my spreadsheet.

It's curious that the couple didn't marry until 1859 but they must have had good reasons - they were clearly living 'as man and wife'.
