1797 marriage Stanhope
« on: Wednesday 11 December 24 17:03 GMT (UK) »
Looking for information from the marriage of Thomas Emerson and Jane Watson in Weardale (probably Stanhope) on 4 January 1797. In particular looking for confirmation of father's names.

Marriage records of this date di not usually included parents names.

This marriage appears to have been by license as there is a bond.

Thanks for the link. Wasn't sure if fathers name would be on. By chance would the age 21 be the exact age of Thomas or that he was over the age of 21. I am struggling to find the baptism record of Thomas as there are a few in Stanhope around the same time 1760/1770s  :'(

Just in case it helps with finding the baptism, the marriage record says that he is “of Wellhope” (she is “of Stanhope”).

Wellhope is/was a hamlet west of Lanehead (i.e. not on an actual road). It’s also a name for that general area I believe.

At Durham Records Online I see that there are Emerson/Emmerson baptisms, abode Wellhope, from 1647 to 1877. But the earliest Thomas is in 1787.

That Thomas was the son of Thomas and Margaret. He was baptised at Irishopeburn Presbyterian. Is it possible that it was a late baptism?

I just noticed that there is clearly something going on around this time with these Emersons, abode Wellhope,  because there are five baptisms in 1803:

John born 1801
Jonathan born 1799
Joseph born 1797
Thomas born 1790
Thomas born 1803

This is from the free search results. I don't have any more credits to investigate further.

tithe records of 1841 for the parish of Forest Quarter have the following as occupiers in the area of Wellhope:

Thomas Emmerson 4 plots, including a house*
Thomas Emmerson and Henry Elliott 1 plot, a house
Jonathan Emmerson 1 plot
Jonathan and Jane Emmerson 2 plots including a house
Jane Emmerson 2 plots

*these are listed as Thomas Emmerson N. side and Thomas Emmerson S. side, so possibly two different men?

Thanks again Alan for all your information. I have John 1801, Jonathan 1799 and Thomas 1803 as children of Thomas Emerson and Jane Watson. I suspect Joseph 1797 may also be their son although I have the 1797 birth as Ralph. They must have all been baptised together. Not sure who the other Thomas is.Thomas and Jane also had children Mary 1805, George 1807, Ralph 1809, Job 1813, Hannah Isabella 1817.  This is as far as I have managed to get as I am stuck with Thomas's birth. Someone has added a birth of 1767 for him on my tree on Family Search with parents Thomas Emerson and Ann Featherstone but I am not convinced. There is a database at the Weardale Museum that has Thomas's parents as Jonathan Emerson and Isobel Fletcher but again I am not convinced. I will be calling at Durham Records Office in the New Year so might get somewhere then. Any further help is greatly appreciated.
