Does anyone have access to the 1881 Scottish census please?  I am looking for an Isabella Conning born 1874 Liverpool, England.  She is not with her parents on the England 1881 census but I have found an Isabella Coming on the Scottish 1881 census, Borgue, Kircudbright (Ref 858/2/12).  Unfortunately, I am not able to access the details.  Isabella's parents were William Conning and Mary Foster, both from Scotland - William from Kirkcudbrightshire.  They married in Liverpool.  I am wondering if Coming has been mistranscribed and should be Conning? Any clarification of the entry would be greatly appreciated.  Many thanks.  Zephyr.

You have exactly the same access as everyone else to the original document, which is available at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk for a small fee.

However the LDS transcription of the 1881 census can be viewed on the same web site free of charge.
See screenshot.

You will see that Isabella Coming is indeed shown as born in Liverpool.

If you are trying to view the information online anywhere other than at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, you will not be able to see the full details.

Not sure about that.

According to another transcription, Alex, Jane and Alex Payne are in Pringleton Village, Borgue and Isabella Coming is in Borgue Free Manse, where the only other occupant is a servant, Ellen Foster.

From the index at Scotland's People, there are 9 Paynes in ED2, all on Page 11. There are two Fosters on the same page, then Ellen Foster and Isabella Coming are on Page 12.

I have a set of the CDs of the LDS transcription, but unfortunately my PC is misbehaving and won't allow me to view them!

You really need to look at the original documents if you want to unravel these Paynes and Fosters and see if Isabella's surname has been mistranscribed.

In the 1881 census at Borgue, your Isabella is shown as a visitor (Her family name is recorded as
Coming) Place of birth is Liverpool, Lancashire. She is shown as being At School. Born 1874 age 7yrs.
She is at the home of Alexander Payne a joiner, his wife Jane & their G/son 9yr old Alexander.
Also present is..........a domestic servant Ellen FOSTER. Aged 23yrs born at Twynholm, Kirkcudbright.

Possible that Ellen/Hellen and Isabella are related.
Rgds Matt
Muir,McDill/Dill,Payne,Hepburn,Ireland,Rae all in Kirkcudbrightshire.

I finally managed to get my CD-ROMs to work.

According to that, Isabella Coming is not in the Payne household.

Alex, Jane and Alex Payne are in a house in Pringleton Village, Borgue, the last house listed on Page 11.

The next household listed, on Page 12, is Borgue Free Manse, where the occupants are the Rev Mr McElder, Free Kirk Minister, and Mrs McElder.

Next, also on Page 12, is another household in the Borgue Free Manse, with only two occupants: Ellen Foster, 23, general servant at manse, born Twynholm, and Isabella Coming, visitor, born Liverpool.

Thank you Matt and Forfarian for your further information.  As Ellen Foster is a servant, I don't think the Paynes and/or McElders are any relation.  Isabella's mother is Mary Foster but on census information I have she just lists that she was born in Scotland.  It could be that Ellen Foster is Mary's sister in which case there is a good chance that Mary was born in Twynholm which gives me a starting point, which is more than I had before!  Thank you both so much for your time and help.  Lots for me to get my teeth into!!!!
