St Paulinus' Church, Crayford, Bromley
« on: Tuesday 13 September 05 20:28 BST (UK) »
On a web site I found reference to a gravestone to Peter Isnell, clerk of the parish, who died in 1811. The gravestone records an amusing epitaph concerning his 3 wives.
Can anyone confirm if the epitaph really exists please.
Thanks, TOG

I live about 5 minutes walk from St. Paulinus Church and it's in the London Borough of Bexley not Bromley.

If it's fine tomorrow I'll go and have a look for you but it's a big site and some of it's quite overgrown.

Hopefully I'll have some luck

I'll take my camera and if I find it I'll take a photo.

Linda

Hi Linda,
Thank you for the kind offer, I look forward to hearing how you get on.
If you are unable to go for a few days because of poor weather/other committments, that is not a problem. I am happy to wait for when it is convenient for you.
Thanks again.

Hi George, I have just found that I have a Peter Isnell in my family tree, could you tell me if one of his 3 wives was Elizabeth Winch, they married in 1762.  Thanks Wynne

Hello Wynne,

Sorry, I know nothing about Peter Isnell, nor his 3 wives. My interest was in the gravestone only.

Hi there, I have a photo of the 'ruined' headstone, taken last year.  It had collapsed onto another grave, but my husband & I put the pieces back onto the rightful grave, around the smaller stone with Peter's name on it. Bexley Archives have pictures of the original, when standing in St Paulinus' churchyard.  The grave reference is A172 in a section immediately on your right as you go through the lytch gate and is half way down, away from the church door. Would you like a copy of the photo?
May I ask what your interest is in the headstone?
Regards,
Sarah Isnell Cook
Hastings.

Hello Sarah,

My interest in the gravestone is because of the amusing epitaph that is supposedly recorded on it.

I "collect" interesting and amusing epitaphs and I read about Peter Isnell's on a website some years ago.

If, indeed, the gravestone does contain such an epitaph I would very much like to have a copy please.

Thank you. and kind regards,
George (TOG)
