Hi Rosie
Many thanks for your reply. As I am not on Ancestry I would appreciate any links you can suggest for further information as Alexander was the son of my gggrandfather and named after him. Many thanks

the NSW BDM is free to search:
https://familyhistory.bdm.nsw.gov.au/lifelink/familyhistory/search?4

You can see the marriage of Alexander M[a]cHARG and Margaret SCOTT in 1894 (159/1894) in Sydney.

For interest, in various electoral rolls Alexander McHARG is at Scott St, Bankstown/Punchbowl with wife Margaret and family, he is a carter. (Available on Ancestry)

You can also find him in the Sydney Sands Directory:
https://archives.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/nodes/view/495003

eg in 1925 at Scott St, Bankstown

I have had a look at the passenger list for the ship “Jumna” which sailed from London 31st May 1889 and arrived at Brisbane (Moreton Bay) 23 July 1889.
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/177609912?searchTerm=Jumna
There is not a great deal of information given for each passenger.
Alexander was recorded as a Free Settler, disembarking in Brisbane. (Jumna stopped a numerous ports in Qld)
Alexander McKarg, age 23, can read and write, Nationality - Scotch. Religion – P, county of origin- Wigtown
1 comment in Remarks “landed as Archibald Newlands”

(I'm not sure what that comment means , or if it is relevant.)
