Help with a disappeared family
« on: Tuesday 03 December 24 13:58 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if anyone has any ideas on this family that I have been coming back to year after year.

In Nov 1881 Thomas Clark married Clara Louisa Butcher (b.1860) in Brighton.  Thomas's birthdate is given as about 1860 on the marriage record.

Clara has a traceable census record from 1861-1881 in Brighton with parents Robert and Mary.

But I cannot seem to find her after the marriage.

Regarding Thomas Clark, I can't seem to find any suitable candidates for him in the previous censuses.  Doesn't seem to have come from Brighton.  His father is given as Charles on the marriage record but that hasn't really helped me.

One new piece of info that I have recently discovered which has led me to this request is that Clara had a daughter in 1880 called Alice Maud Mary Butcher (no father named).  Alice is shown in the 1881 census as Clara's sister, but I have never been able to trace her either.

But now knowing that she is Clara's daughter, I wonder if she may have been adopted by Clara and her new husband and maybe known by the surname Clark.

But I still haven't had any luck.

Has anyone got any ideas or maybe a fresh way of looking at it?

Roger

Thanks - some good options there.  Particularly the birth date for Alice Maud Mary Clarke.  21 Apr 1880.

The birth date of Alice Maud Mary Butcher is 24 Apr 1880.

Also, Rosetta is also the name of one of Clara's sisters.

And there is obviously the Poulterer link.

3 days difference in birth date is nothing especially when people could not read and write.
