Location of Tontine
« on: Monday 02 December 24 03:36 GMT (UK) »
So I've been searching ine of my ancestors Isabella Campbell. I found an isabella campbell listed in a newspaper article from 1858 about the murder of James Johnston. She was witness to the murder that happened in her close. Poor guy, it is a sad read. But what caught my eye is that it is very close to where my Isabella lived. Now, it may be an entirely different Isabella, but it's got me wondering what street they meant now.

I checked out town plans of Glasgow from around that period and found a building labelled Tontine so I'm assuming that's around the area they mean when the article mentioned it happened in tontine close?

A quote from the article states "the entrance to this close, or narrow lane, is from Trongate, at the western end of the Tontine hotel... extends backwards about 90 yards, when it turns at a right-angle eastward, and extends about 65 yards opening up onto high street; not far from the right angle is a small opening into bell street"

Just to give you an idea of the positioning and location of the close. So it's somewhere near Bell Street? In the vicinity of Old Vennel and Glasgow Cross? Is this a street name, Tontine? Or is the street called something else. I was struggling to find a street called Tontine.

I'm just curious now where abouts this was as I'm finding it hard to picture in my mind, granted, a lot of these old back streets do not exist anymore.

Is the Tontine Hotel facing onto Trongate with Bell Street to the north and High Street to the east ?  Can't see a close/street named Tontine

Yes I think that's right, I'm just a bit confused what street they actually mean? Like maybe a lane that runs behind Tontine Hotel. They say they live in tontine close so i assume its not the hotel itself. By the description, it seems to be maybe a lane running behind the hotel, but I'm struggling to know what to search when it comes to census records to find out some more info.

It does sound like one of the alleys/close between the hotel and Bell Street.   A modern search brings up a Tontine Lane in the location https://www.rootschat.com/links/01tiq/

Well found and a number of newspaper reports mention Bush Close to the west of it

I noticed that a report of the trial  - in the press on 1 May 1858 Glasgow Courier - a girl Isabella Brown nearly 13 gives evidence and she was living in the same tenement as Isabella Campbell

I wonder if this might be Isabella Brown in 1861 - living with her family at Bell Street, Saint David, Glasgow Central  in the parish of St David.   At it gives the parish to look in :-\
