WW2 Recruit Training Papakura Military camp Jan 1941
« on: Saturday 30 November 24 23:29 GMT (UK) »
My Father In Law, according to his military personnel record entered Papakura Military camp on 8 January 1941.
Next entry is "Marched In from Base R.D. to 31 AK - 19.6.41.

I have a photo of his recuit training Battalion.  On the bottom of this photo there is hand written "C Coy [undercypherable first letter; ? GT] Infantry Tainui Battalion Papakura M C" [presume Military Camp].
My question is what could the undercypherable letter be ? - can anybody assist please?
Also where am I likely to find further information about the Tainui Battalion?

Tks

Thanks Whenu for your posting.
My understanding is that the 28th Maori Battalion companies were made up along tribal lines; ie C Company - East Coast and D Company - Waikato, Wellington, Sth Island.
As he was from the Hamilton area, hence Tainui?
As he was in the Infantry I don't think that he was in the 28th Maori Battalion.
What were the names of the training Battalions at this time?

As an aside, I came across some interesting/sad stories while researching soldiers of the 28th Maori Battalion who had unclaimed medals and passing info onto Te Mata Law (David Stone).

List of battalions in WW2.
Might be able to get an idea here.

Best bet might be to chase up the 21st (Auckland) Battalion history.

I can't vouch as to how complete this 28th battalion list is, but maybe stick his name in the search and see if he pops up?

Thanks Whenu and bbart for your postings.
I put in his name in the 28th Maori Battalion database but no record came up.
Will look into the AKL Battalion history.
Thanks
