Mariage Mystery - de Courcy - Hare - Kirby
« on: Thursday 28 November 24 15:57 GMT (UK) »
I have a Horace Woodburn Kirby who marries for the second time in 1893 to a B. Lilian de Courcy. This is taken from various newspaper marriage announcements and she is the youngest daughter of Charles John Hare.
Assuming she married as Hare I cannot find a marraige to a de Courcy.
The 1901 Census shows her birth as 1874. That would mean she married Kirby at aged about 19 and how would she have managed a marriage before that to be shown as de Courcy in 1893?

The 1893 marriage register has her as Bessie Lilian de Courcy Hare, spinster, aged 20.

She is Bessie L deC Hare age 7 on the 1881 census return.

If you look at the other marriage announcements on the same newspaper page, none of them mention the brides surname.
They are all the the format ‘……..Mary, daughter of Edward Bloggs……’.

The Kirby/ Hare marriage announcement has followed the same format, i.e. only giving her Christian names.

Thanks,

That clears up the two marriages before she was 20 query.....!

I have not seen the de Courcey name in her family before having not foumd her in the 1881 Census. Now I know where to look.
