Thank you Wexflyer for clarifying why the record was where it was!! Also I was confused by the date of birth being different.

Stacey -- the marriage certificate would, as you know, confirm the father's name - and hopefully tally with the birth certificate. Then you can be sure it's the correct John. Unfortunately it will cost though - but on the bright side, the birth cert was free!

Yes the marriage is essential.
There are these O’Neill/Thompson births around that time

1938 - female, Coventry
1942 - male, Coventry
1943 June quarter - female, Warwick  * the one you refer to
1943 December quarter - female, Coventry

The marriage you quote was 1939 , Coventry and the couple can be seen in 1939 register.
It all looks favourable.

The female born 1938, Coventry is also in 1939 register with a different mother.
I asked earlier, were there any O’Neill siblings?
