Help With North East Knowledge Please
« on: Sunday 24 November 24 10:27 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone I'm looking for some help / knowledge in relation to the north east of England please.

I have a Scottish ancestor born late 1880's who was the child of an unmarried underage girl from the poor east end of Glasgow.

He states his birthplace was North Shields but We have no connection to this part of the world. He assumed a new identity in early adulthood, I have no idea what his birth name was.

I can't find any connection that would make sense. This is where I was hoping to get some specialist knowledge from north east forum users!

Why would a 16 year old, poor, unmarried, mother from the east end of Glasgow give birth in North Shields?

Thanks for any help

On what document did he state that he was born in North Shields?

Welcome to RootsChat :-)

Without knowing anything about the mother or the child there's nothing on which to base a 'guess' on why she would be in North Shields.
How sure are you that there was no family connection in the area? No siblings/aunts/uncles/cousins etc ?

If you give more details about the mother and son and the confirmed records you have for them we could look / suggest likely places that may have relevant records which may help.

I’ve found that sometimes people stated their place of birth to be somewhere they remembered living when they were small, and not necessarily where they were actually born.

So it’s not beyond the bounds of possibility that he was adopted and the family in question moved to North Shields when he was very young.

As Boo has said you need to give some details of the confirmed records you’ve actually got.

On what document did he state that he was born in North Shields?

Thanks for your reply. This was stated on the 1921 Scottish Census.

Thanks for your reply. Definitely no connections to North Shields.

I guess my question would be - would anyone with knowledge of North Shields know of any reason a Glasgow girl in 1887 would be giving birth in North Shields, were there any known charitable / religious organisations facilitating such things?

I live in North Shields and the only thing I can think of would be that we had a busy fishing port and coal industry in the area, could they be connected to that?

Perhaps she was one of the herring girls that used to come down?

River Tyne Lass might have some ideas if she sees this, it may be worth altering the title of this to include North Shields.

Thanks very much for your kind reply, Michael.

I read about the herring girlds, very interesting. It seems North Shields had a very vibrant fishing industry.

It also had specific denominations of Presbyterianism which i didn't expect for England. The area my relative came from was strong in Presbyterianism.

Thanks for the suggeestion on the thread title  :)

I agree with Shiny, if the mother was a Herring girl, she would have followed the fleet from Scotland down the East coast to Norfolk,
Gunning County Down,Kneale Isle of Man,Riddle Tynemouth,Bibby Kendal/Bradford,Colenso Penzance/Barrow-in-Furness,Steele Corney Fell,Chapman Ely,Dawes Alfreton,Blamire Westmoreland and Ulverston
