Update on the commemoration of this WW1 soldier, John James CASH (October 2025

The CWGC has been catching up with the creation of its official headstones for first time commemorations, including this one for Lance Corporal John James CASH, 1st Bn, The Border Regiment. In the near future, a short service of remembrance and dedication of the headstone at the graveside is planned, in a joint service with another Border Regiment WW1 soldier, Private Henry WELSH. They are both interred in Cleator (St Mary's RC) churchyard.

After double checking with the CWGC, for John James CASH, no close living relatives could be traced or have come forward, although some have been traced for Henry WELSH. Therefore, the official headstone for John James CASH will be left blank where a family epitaph would normally go, whereas for Henry WELSH, his relatives have supplied a short epitaph to be engraved on the headstone. We believe there may be relatives of the CASH family living in the Millom area. As none have come forward to confirm a family relationship that is basically the end of that line of enquiry. Nevertheless, henceforth any relatives will be able to trace the grave and memorial as the CWGC commemorate him in perpetuity.
