Philipp Schmidt immigrant to New South Wales
« on: Thursday 21 November 24 20:32 GMT (UK) »

Please, I am looking for more information about this immigrant to Australia.
New South Wales, Australia, Assisted Immigrant Passenger Lists, 1828-1896.
Philipp Schmidt, age 43 (born calculated 1812), Shepherd, Native place & country: Baden, parents: dead Laurence & Elisabeth, Religion: Evangelical, read or write: both, Arrived 31 Mar 1855, New South Wales, Australia, Vessel Aurora, Alternate Origin Location: Lorch, Nassau

I am trying to find out what happened to Philipp Schmidt, born 1 Mar 1811 in Ober-Auerbach, Durlach, Karlsruhe, Baden, to Lorenz Schmidt & Elisabetha Brecht. Lorenz, who was born in Hohenswetterbach, was a citizen of Kleinsteinbach, and moved around working as a shephard. I am also looking for Philipp's brothers Andreas and Jacob. His brother Michael Schmidt, my 3rd great grandfather, immigrated to the USA. In the USA Michael's Schmidt name evolved to Smith. I have added more about the family here:

Thank you.

There is a  reference to Andreas Schmidt arr 1855 Tasmania with wife and family  (Register of Hiring Immigrants and in 1866 Naturalisation Certificate South Australia. Death in Victoria 1870)
Several deaths for a Jacob Schmidt in Victoria in 1860 1869 1877. Death records show unknown parents, born Germany.

I don't think this is much help, sorry, and some of the references on Trove are from German language newspapers printed in Adelaide. Google translate not that helpful with old German.

Thank you Shume for the possibilities! I didn't realize there were German language newspapers on Trove. I will take a look.

Following on from Shume's post. I don't think the fella who died 1870 is the correct one.

There is a Grant of administration for him online in Vic archives and it states there is no brothers, sisters or widow. His mother appears to be alive and is named Chrisitna? Hanna Schmidt.
Will post the link below, hope it opens ok for you.

[Sorry about the link, not sure how to do it to make it smaller]
