Where was David Wait/e born?

David Wait/e was buried in 1793 at Bunhill Fields Non-Conformist Cemetery at the age of 55. He worked as a carpenter in New Inn Street, Shoreditch. Although he married at Christchurch Spitalfields, most of his children were baptised at the Scottish Congregation at London Wall Church. David and his wife served as witnesses to the marriage of James Wait/e, a cooper who later became a brandy merchant. James also resided in New Inn Street for a time and had his children baptised at London Wall Scots Church. Like David, James was buried at Bunhill Fields. Could they have been brothers?

Despite extensive searching, I’ve been unable to find a birth or baptism record for David, either in Scotland or elsewhere. Does anyone have suggestions on additional sources or strategies to explore further?

It might say of---- formerly of -----. or mention property owned elsewhere.

There is a will of a David Waite written 21 December 1745 Probate 29 December 1747.
He is a Cooper of London about to embark on a voyage to the East Indies. He leaves
everything to his father and mother John Waite -Farmer of Whithridge (s/b Witheridge) Berwick Upon Tweed and his wife Grizzle.

Who were the witnesses to David's marriage?

I see the witnesses to the marriage in 1762 at Spitalfields were Samuel Wood and William Brodie. Brodie sounds Scottish so maybe he was a friend/relative by blood/marriage of David.

I did find a James Waite apprenticed to a John Roper in 1756 in Norfolk as a carpenter. Likely a coincidence though.

Thank you so much!, LizzieL, coombs, Brodie, and amondg, for all your kind help. James Wait/e left a will; he was a successful brandy merchant, but he doesn't mention David Wait.

Coombs, I have looked at the witnesses at David's marriage to Eleanor Rice in 1763. They were James Wood and William Brodie. Brodie certainly does sound Scottish, and intriguingly, a William Brodie was baptised in Edrom, Berwickshire, just 3 miles from a family of well-established Waits in Chirnside. But at the moment, I can't find a David Wait/e that fits.

James Wood, the other witness to the marriage, has quite a common name around Middlesex. There are two that stand out. A James Wood, born in St. Martin in The Fields, is recorded in the marriage bonds as marrying a Ruth Wilcox at that church. His signature is similar to the one on David's marriage and St. Martin in the Fields, according to the author of Scotophobia, was popular with the early Scottish settlers.
