CROWTHER FAMILY OF ISLINGTON AREA
« on: Sunday 17 November 24 14:55 GMT (UK) »
Hi All

I wonder if anyone with Ancestry could take a look at a family for me. The family I am interested in is CROWTHER the head is CUTHBERT BELL CROWTHER born 1902 & HIS WIFE WINIFRED CROWTHER (NEE RAMUS) born 1901 Winifred parents were James Ramus & Jane Ramus (Hall) they were from the Islington area of London. They had a Son Derek Crowther born in 1936 who is shrouded in mystery.

I am keen to know if any trees (there are 10 apparently) have Derek Crowther born 5th July 1936 London in their tree & more importantly what information they have on him, in particular, if he married, had any Children, where & when he died, these are crucial questions I am trying to get answered, It's frustrating because I only recently closed my Ancestry account. Hope some kind soul can assist me. Thanks in advance Ed

This is the man found in Australia who has been alleged by some to be Lord Lucan?
His entry is open on the 1939 Register, with a surname change to Jason recorded, 3.3.71.
Father Cuthbert's occupation in 1939 was Bakers Table Hand.

Couple of newspaper reports about him in the Holloway Press in the 1950's
More importantly there is a naturalisation file for him on the Australian archives website. Thirty two images.

Hi

Thank you for replying, & well spotted. I have been glued to the BBC documentary & was trying to help Neil Berriman (Don't know him personally) I suppose trying to prove it one way or the other.

I assume you have watched the documentary, it's looking more like the research was wrong, but the letter & conversations with Steve Gillies in Australia who was attacked by his friend you have got to admit it's pretty whacky! that & all the name changes.

Maybe he has got his own secrets, just being Lord Lucan is not one of them?

Regards
Ed

He is not Lord Lucan. He went to Australia circa 1972. Probably playing along a bit with Mr. Berriman, enjoying the attention.

Hi

I have just got the Holloway Press stories, he mentions about his father doing Puppetry at the Palace & I see he was a puppeteer at one point.

That name change in 1971 the first of many, you say he went to Australia about 1972, apparently he was in a drag show called Facad in Toronto in 1969.

However I wonder if the reason for the initial name change in 1971 was to hide the fact that he had a criminal record which would probably scuppered his entry to Australia in 1972

Maybe the old man was fearful of the authorities finding out & deporting him, which could have lead to the successive changes of name.

Hi

Still struggling I click the top link no joy there & then tried the link further down the page. That just took me to a blank page so I copied & pasted the full URL into my browser & got this after clicking on an image on that landing page, however if this is the one you mean then it not the same man.

This record says Derek Michael Crowther born 1941, not seen Michael mentioned before but more relevant is that Derek Bell Crowther was born 05 July 1936

CROWTHER Derek Michael born 29 December 1941; Enid Mary (nee Battrick) born 26 July 1942; Nicolette Ann born 13 August 1963; Mark Derek born 3 December 1966; travelled per aircraft departing UK on 30 July 1970 under the Assisted Passage Migration Scheme

As that birth was recorded so late in 1941 with the Christmas shut down he would have been registered in early 1942

Births Mar 1942   (>99%)
Crowther    Derek M    Stoten    Hitchin    3a   1765

Not our man.
