Lippiatt name found in a book

Ive found a set of Charles Dickens books from 1870, in book one theres a message (correct me if you think its something different written), " For W. C. Lippiatt on his 7th birthday from his mama. November 25th 1876 " (but then in pencil the 7 has been changed to 8 ). I'm trying to find this family to see who's books I have as they have clearly been cherished until there was nobody left in the family to have them. I'm very sentimental. I'm struggling finding the boy, would the date written be the date it was written, or the date of his birth, also the correction confuses me to why and if it was done after?

I think the word you have taken as 'for' might be 'Jos.'  The 'f' in 'from' is different.

I'm not seeing any likely births in England and Wales in the possible time frame. Can you say what country the book might be from?

Thankyou for spotting that, that may be helpful! These books were found in Chorley in the UK, northwest, but from past things ive found here a lot are from home clearances and can be from all over the UK.

The closest match I can find is a man born in Quebec, around 1879 (which would make him 7 in 1886) - Joseph W Lippiatt.  He died in 1924:

Joseph's parents were Joseph Lippiatt born in Clutton, Somerset, and Harriet Sophia née Chambers:

As you can see, Joseph sr. died in 1879, and Harriett in 1887.  Their only other child was Thomas Havelock Lippiatt, born in 1877.  Thomas, usually called Havelock Lippiatt qualified as a surgeon. I don't know when he left Canada, but he married Gladys Griffiths in Radnorshire in 1922.  He was living in Bryncoed, Radnor in 1939, and died in Coleford, Gloucestershire in 1947.  I don't think they had any children, but if he brought his brother's book with him, perhaps it passed to someone in his wife's family.  (I don't suppose the book was printed in Canada?)

Thankyou so much for that! I did find this family (the 3 of them) on a Canada Census stating mum was Scotch but then I got a bit lost as on another record it said , but the dad dying in 1879 would make sense to why Harriett signed the book just from herself, how sad that he may have never met his father. Ill have a look at where it was printed

Thankyou so much, the 25th November confirms its him! I need to remember to use Family Search more. I can imagine Josephs Brother brought the books back with him, they obviously meant a lot to him, maybe because it was his mothers writing / last message.

  so many posting while trying to post, but will add anyway!
Brother Thomas Havelock Lippiatt, did sign up for WW1, but there are no CEF signup papers or the usual followup docs as to his service, rejection, or changing of corps. ( he does appear to have a Regimental number: 11155-H-7)  All this does sound like a likely scenario, though.
