DetailSource
Name:   Nicholas Barry
Baptism Age:   0
Event Type:   Baptism
Birth Date:   1823
Baptism Date:   29 Mar 1823
Baptism Place:   Wexford, Rathangan, Ireland
Diocese:   Ferns
Father:
Thomas Barry
Mother:
Bridget Barry

This is my family line but the parents, Thomas and Bridgid (Cosgrove) Barry, were married in Tallow, Waterford, Ireland.  Three of their children, John Thomas, Eliz and Nicholas were baptized in Wexford.  Does anybody know anything about Barry or Cosgrove connections in Wexford?  Thank you.

Some points:
- I see four children. Also Mary, bapized. 11/5/1819
- None of the baptisms give a surname for the mother, so where did Cosgrove come from?
- Several other Barry's appear as sponsors, presumably uncles/aunt. This says the family was local.
- Tallow, Co. Waterford is far away. That the parents would marry there would be unusual, due to the distance. How would the parents have met? Is this just a coincidence?
(Looking under the street light as the effect is called).
- The son John is baptized simply as John, not John Thomas.

Thomas Barry appears to have been a farmer in the townland of Philippintown.
Here is the entry for him in the 1833 tythe valuation.
He farmed 25 Irish acres - not English acres!

Philippintown is in the Catholic parish of Rathangan, and civil parish of Ballyconnick.
Here is a link for the location

There is also a Thomas Barry in the 1853 Griffith's Valuation, shown farming 47-3-27 acres (now English acres), and living in a 10s house.
A Mary Anne Barry has 91-1-34 acres, and has a much more substantial 3-10-0 pound house.

Would be very strange for a farmer from a poor 10s house to marry as far away as Tallow.

Griffith's Valuation can be viewed at

Thomas is also listed on a valuation of houses in the townland of Philippintown on 18/4/1846, see
http://census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/vob/IRE_CENSUS_1821-51_007246832_00169.pdf

From that valuation, Mary Anne Barry was the successor to the Mark Barry listed on the tythe valuation. From the parish registers, it appears she was his widow.

Note that there is a substantial difference between the tythe and Griffith's valuations as to the total area of the townland of Philippintown.

I just looked at OP's previous posts. She neglected to point to several previous posts about this family, mentioning other names, which don't appear in the Wexford parish records.

In particular, there is a baptism in Tallow, Co. Waterford of a daughter Elizabeth to a Thomas and Bridget Barry on 13/4/1819.

As the Rathangan, Co. Wexford Thomas and Bridget Barry had a daughter Mary, baptized 11/5/1819, this proves conclusively that these are TWO DIFFERENT COUPLES. [Just as I suspected].

So, if OP believes that her family originated in Tallow, as indicated in previous posts, then I just wasted a lot of time - time that could have been saved by a simple initial reference back to those previous posts.

Link for one set of previous posts on Barrys of Tallow, Co. Waterford.
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=718647.msg5635679#msg5635679

From the details in those posts, it is clear that they can't possibly be the same family as the Rathangan, Co. Wexford Barrys.
