Battle of Jutland - struggling to find a record
« on: Tuesday 12 November 24 08:22 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone

I am trying to find military records for my Great Grandfather Herbert Hargreaves (also know Herbert Howard when he was a young boy).

DOB 27th April 1885, born Bury, Lancashire.

My dad was told by his Dad that Herbert served in the Navy and was at the Battle Of Jutland in 1916. Apparently he lost his eye in battle.

I cannot find anything at all that relates to this - now we are wondering if it was a made up fantasy!

Can anyone help point me in the direction of where I should be looking for records? I have tried Fold3, Ancestry, Familysearch and MyHeritage.

Here’s to hoping someone can help!

Thank you

Vicki

Did Herbert Hargreaves have at least two children in WW1,  a girl in 1915 and a boy in 1917?
The father's occupation should be on the children's birth certs or baptism records.

Thank you for this - I’ve had a good look and can’t find anything. Something is telling me that this story wasn’t true!

Hi Tony

Yes he did. I never thought to check their birth certificates and I have found the answer! See pic. So not the navy but the army?!

Thank you ever so much for the tip!

Herbert has a Silver War Badge Record, he was discharged from the Lancs Fusr due to wounds on the 29-1-16. This was several months before the Battle of Jutland which occurred the end of May and the beginning of June.

There are only 2 Hargreaves on the Jutland crew list, a Samuel and a James.
