Thompson - Sault Ste Marie

Hi everyone,
This is a long shot but I’m trying to find an elusive ancestor from the Sault Ste Marie area of Ontario. An elderly relative remembers that a James H Thompson died young in a copper mine in the area. He recalls his mother’s maiden name being Hussler / Hustler (unsure of spelling). My relative is in his 90s and I’m unfortunately unable to obtain any further information at the moment, so I have no idea of when this actually happened.

I do know an ancestor of ours - Samuel Thompson - moved from County Tyrone in Northern Ireland (where the Thompsons came from) sometime before 1891, as he married a Martha Thompson in Montréal and by 1893 he started having a family - they can be seen in the 1921 census. So it is possible this James H was a brother, or could be a son, or could well in fact be part of Samuel’s wife’s Thompson family…

There’s not much to go on but I have exhausted my online searching efforts, and wanted to see if anyone on here could shed any light

According to another tree, James married Mary Hostler (Osler) in 1881 in Hastings County, Ontario
James died 20 Mar 1902, Sudbury, Ontario
Also, Samuel’s birthplace was recorded as Holly Hill, Strabane, Tyrone, Ireland

According to the 1901 census, James was a Miner.

Added: according to the two trees, James did not have a son named James.  Could there be a bit of a mixup and James’ wife rather than mother was Hussler?  Or, perhaps James did have a son named James but he was not included in the trees.  Or, the above is just a red herring.

I’m having difficulty reading the writing on the image, but perhaps the following is correct:

Incoming passenger list for the Sarmatian
Samuel Thompson
Arrival Age - 20
Birth Date - about 1855
Embarkation Port - Liverpool, England; Londonderry, Ireland
Arrival Date and port - 26 May 1875, Quebec, Quebec, Canada

James Thompson, age 26, Farmer
Robt Thompson, age 25, Farmer
Samuel? Thompson, age 20, Farmer
All bound for Quebec

I haven’t found a tree that includes a brother named Robert so perhaps the above is for a different family.

The 1881 marriage record for James to Mary Hostler has his parents as Wm Thompson and Ann Hays.

The 1891 marriage of Samuel to Martha Thompson has his parents as William Thompson and Annie Hayes. Samuel is also noted as a widower and Martha a widow, married name Woods.

So it appears the two could be brothers.

Images of both records are on ancestry if you have access. The record for James would also be available on familysearch (free) but apparently not the one for Samuel.

Oh my goodness, this is amazing! I can’t believe how much has been found - how wonderful!

My Samuel did have a brother James, but I didn’t appreciate that he was “the” James Hayes Thompson. I wonder if it was his wife whose maiden name was Hostler, rather than his mother, as you suggest Lisa…

I’ll need to spend some time looking into this but how amazing, thank you! I’m keen to find more on this family and their descendants. I suspect a few of the family must have emigrated over from Ireland - from what I understand, the name Thompson is quite popular in the Sault Ste Marie area.

One needs to be careful with trees on ancestry but there is one with another sibling listed with James and Samuel, Isabella.

You have found some great helpers on here Lara! I can appreciate the number of Thompsons to have to search through although mine were the "dry" ones (dirtiest joke my staunch old grandmother would ever say, as there was no "P" in Thomson )
