I'm having a blonde moment
« on: Saturday 09 November 24 17:21 GMT (UK) »
(with apologies to blondes!)

My great grandmother had several siblings and I have DNA matches with descendants of most of the siblings, at around 3rd cousin level (60. - 100 cm).

I'm trying to sort out where/how another person fits in. He shares matches with my known  3rd cousins as above; plus a couple of other matches at 35cm level, whom i assume are from the same family (the surname's right, but they haven't replied to emails), plus my closest cousin (actually a half-first cousin, from my mum's halfbrother).

Here's the blonde bit. Am I right in assuming that the shared link between us all must be at least one generation further back than my gt-grandmother and her siblings?

(That sounds obvious now but I'm doubting myself!)

Hi,
A 35cM match has a very large range of possible relationships.  If you look at the DNA Painter shared cM tool, it give the following as the most likely (at 51%), but there a a lot more at smaller chances.

5C3R † 6C 6C1R 5C 6C2R 4C1R 5C1R 7C Half 3C2R 4C2R 5C2R 7C1R 3C3R 4C3R 8C or more distant

So i would assume that you are probably looking at another 2 generations back at least.

Also the 18% chance gives

Half 3C 3C1R Half 2C2R 2C3R

Assuming your test is with Ancestry,  you could subscribe to the Ancestry Pro Tools  option?  This might give you more possible relationships to the 3rd cousins. You could subscribe to it (£4.99 per month)  for a month or so.

Gadget

Add - Using the Advanced Shared Matches tool, you could see how this person relates to the other shared matches.

Yes that was just to lure you in.

If you were a bit reticent and waited a couple of months it had gone up to £7.99, which I suspect is the price for those of us who break the £4.99 sub and then want to take up another month later.

But ProTools aside, is my premise in the original post correct? -- ie that our shared ancestor must be at least gt-gt-grandparents, given that I know that the other matches are with descendants of my gt-grannie's siblings?

Probably, but looking at the 18% chance, it could be from great grandparents with generational difference.

Also the 18% chance gives

Half 3C 3C1R Half 2C2R 2C3R
