Hulse family - missing relatives
« on: Saturday 09 November 24 08:32 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I'm a descendant of the Hulse family and am struggling to find information on them. My Great Grandmother was Phoebe Hulse, b 14 June 1886 in Northop, Flintshire, Wales. There is no record of her father on her birth certificate but her mother was Hannah Hulse, b Birkenhead in 1865. Hannah Hulse father shows as Charles Hulse (born Abt. Jun 1835 in Northop, Flintshire, Wales) and Married to a Margaret Davidson on various documents. I can't find any other info on the family, so any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance

In the 1891 census, Pheobe is with her grandparents in Northop (Charles and Margaret).
Also, there is another grandchild, Maggie, aged 5, born Northop.

Also, in the 1901 census, Charles and Margaret have a grandson, William, aged 5, b. Northop, staying with them.

Have you checked the birth records of Maggie and William?

According to the 1901 census, Charles was born in Cheshire in 1835.

Probable baptism: Charles, son of George and Phoebe Hulse, on 21st June 1835 in Farndon, Cheshire.

He is on all of the censuses from 1841.

Pheobe (aged 21) appears to have married a William  Ackerley  in St Mary's,  Liscard, Chester Diocese  on 14 Dec  1907, giving her father's name as Charles Hulse, a labourer (her grandfather??)

Witnesses  Henry Bennett and Nellie Dover or Rover

I have Hulse relatives through marriage. They originated from the Cheshire/Welsh borders.

Add
After checking my tree, I find that they are unlikely to be this family as they originated in Staffordshire and in Denbighshire by 1901.

Hi
The problem with finding them is misspelling and indexing of the surname.
An Anc*
1871 Dublin Row Northop
Charles HULTS  30 ag lab Carden Cheshire
Margaret 40 Mold Flintshire
Mary 10 Birkenhead
Hannah 5 Birkenhead

1881 as HULETS Pentre  Moch Flintshire
Charles 50 farm servant Cheshire
Margaret 55 Mold Flintshire

1861 Birkenhead  1 Masons Crt
Charles Hulse 25 lab Farn?
Margaret 28 Hawrden
Mary 1 Birkenhead  (GRO June 1860 Wirral)

And you have them 1891,1901.
Charles is baptised Fardon 21.6.1835 s of George and Pheobe of Clutton lab.
He's with them at Clutton on the 1841 and 1851 censuses.
( I would type them but it's a very large family of at least 10 kids  and the Library shuts early on a Saturday)

I think that Margaret was quite a bit older. The censuses give her birth as 1825 -1831 Hawarden/Mold.
I think this is her at Hawarden
Margaret Davison bapt2.2.1823 born 2.1.1823 d of William and Elizabeth collier Bistree? Mold Parish with a possible maiden name for mother as Roberts. (it's in a separate column and I'm not sure what it means).
Siblings Peter 21.3/28.3.1813 ,Mary 7.11./20.12.1816 ,Elizabeth 28.12.1820 bapt 21.1.1821,Ellen 3.8./11.9. 1825 Buckley ,Joseph 11/27.11.1828

I'll see what else I can find on their marriage

Hi All, so I've managed to piece together everyone except for my Great Great Grandmother Hannah Hulse's partner. From various birth, marriage and death certificates of Phoebe and William (her children), as well as censuses, she was a widower and therefore must have been married. I have been unable to locate her marriage certificate though. The marriage certificate of William Hulse states his father was Charles Hulse. I am also unable to locate Williams birth certificate (he was born in Northop, Flintshire in 1895) in either the North Wales BMD nor the General Register Office so I'm pretty stuck on this. Phoebe Hulse's birth certificate does not show who the father is, no details at all.  Any help / advice would be appreciated. Thanks  :)
