Ships leaving Copenhagen 1892

The cargo ship SELKIRK left Copenhagen about the first of August 1892. On board was 16 year old Thomas Egin KOFOD. The ship arrived in NEW YORK 10 days later.

Is there any record of this ship leaving Copenhagen and is there a crew list?

I think KOFOD was on board as a sailor.

Any scrap or detail is welcomed.

The Liverpool Journal of Commerce of 15th August 1892 lists "Selkirk from Copenhagen" as arriving at New York on 31st July. I can't see a date of departure anywhere.

This confirms for me that a ship with that spelling undertook the sea route from Copenhagen to NY.

Thomas Egin Kofod did the trip in 10 days from the first of August, so it's conceivable that other trips in the same year would be possible, or even usual for a cargo vessel

I feel pretty happy to know that SS SELKIRK was an actual ship.

Does the ship appear in the records for the year before or after 1892?

His petition for naturalization in the US says he arrived in New York on or about 1 August 1892.
He applied for a passport on 3 January 1900 and said he arrived on the Selkirk on that date.
But he's not in the Ellis Island records, and the ship is not either, so I guess cargo ships are not included in those records.

10 days for the trip sounds about right.

Brilliant. That's in line with my thinking about the Selkirk being a cargo ship and which would mean he was crew not emigrant.

At 16 yrs and 8 months, I can't help wonder if he was a runaway! It seems so young.

He was on a crew not much later, on a ship out of Salem, Massachusetts:

I certifythat the Am. Ship Mindore whereof Creelman is master from Manila, arrived in this port this date. The "Original Crewlist" could not be found, but the accompanying list shows the original and additional men as per articles

Excellent.
That's more comprehensive than what I found and I'm adding your info to my profile on this fellow.

The Ship was the Mindoro and it was at sea for 16 months and Thomas must have been part of the original crew. He would have gone from the Selkirk to Mindoro in a space of months, moving from one cargo vessel to the next.

Additionally, he was Assistant Purser on the SS Eretria: - Feb 10 to May 17, 1903, New York to Sydney, Australia, where he stayed.
