Looking for Church Street Hollingworth in 1891?
« on: Thursday 07 November 24 16:03 GMT (UK) »

Please could anyone help with the above mystery?

My great grandfather William Howe was  born 1854 in Hollingworth Cheshire.

In 1881 he was living in Moorfield Terrace Hollingworth. In 1891 he was living in Church Street Hollingworth. In 1901 he was back living in Moorfield Terrace.

I have been on Google Street View but I cannot find a Church Street now.  I have found Church Road and am wondering if Church Street was demolished and changed to Church Road at some stage?

I would be very grateful if anyone could help.

Thank you very much.

I lived in Moorfield Terrace from 1964-67, at the top of the left hand side in what was a new build at the time.  I don't know if the houses were built on open land or whether some of the older terraced houses had been knocked down.  I know the council converted the houses at the top of the right hand side, by knocking 2 houses into one to make them suitable for families.

Church Street rings a bell, but I sadly, I can't remember where it was.

I have looked at neighbours from 1891 and some are living on Moorfield Terrace in 1881.
If you look at the Enumerator’s Route for both 1881 and 1891, they are very similar. However, neither 1881 nor 1891 mentions Church Street.

1881 - Moorfield Street, Moorfield Terrace, Gas Street, Green Lane, Wood Street, Thorncliffe Wood, etc

1891 - Moorfield Street, King Street, Moorfield Terrace, Gas Street, Green Lane, Wood Street, Thorncliffe Wood etc

You may be able to plot it on a map.

I wonder if it is Church St, Hadfield - just next to Hollingworth?

I'm probably wrong. Here's Gas St (off Market St, parallel to Moorfield Terrace) in 1896, which are just before Church St on the enumerator's route in 1891.

Strange though that Church St is not mentioned in the description of the enumeration district on page 1 of the 1891 census. Maybe it is Hadfield and just in the wrong place on the census?

Just following on from HT in reply #3 – the fact that there is not a single bona fide hit for “Church Street Hollingworth” at BNA tells me that it did not exist.

If you follow the map passed Gas Street and down Market Street, eventually you come to a Church and School on the left hand side of the road.  The top of the street by the side of the Church is not named but then lower down it becomes dotted lines (I guess that means not made up or private road) which is called Taylor Street.  I wonder if the top of the street was originally called Church Street.

Church Street is also listed in the 1861 census, between Hollingworth Street and Moorfield Street.
