Fowler’s Cottage Wyke Regis
« on: Monday 04 November 24 09:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi. I am trying to trace two people who lived at Fowler’s Cottage Wyke Regis in 1828. John Horlock died there and his housekeeper Susan Birom was the name given for contact.

I have been researching Susan for many years now, she is my brick wall and I would love to know how she and John were connected to Wyke Regis. I am not sure how to find out about their time in the cottage and would really appreciate any help and advice.

Thank you
Alison

I can see an 1828 newspaper advert requesting that a "Mrs Birom" be contacted. Is this "your" Susan?

The baptism of George Henry Birom, 26 Apr 1820, Topsham, appears to include an added note that reads "bas'd(?) 19 Sep 1821".
The baptism of John Martin, 19 Sep 1821, mother Susan, widow, abode Topsham, is endorsed -
* Rec'd(?) having been previously baptised at Emsworth in Hampshire"

Cannot spot a previous baptism of a John martin Birom, only a -
William BiroN, 29 Mar 1818, place St Thomas Warblington, abode Emsworth, father William, a tailor, mother Susan

Hi, yes, that's my Susan, thanks.

I have no idea why she or her employer were at Fowler's cottage, they lived in Exeter but he died in Weymouth so this part of their history is a mystery to me.

John Horlock's will says John Martin Birom was his godson, was the second baptism to record this relationship?
JH's will said he wanted to be buried at Pinhoe or a country churchyard near his place of death (Wyke Regis) and it said Susan had lived with him for seven years - the will was written in October 1824. - that would be 1817, before the William Biron baptism in Emsworth.

I hadn't thought about the second baptism like that, thanks, another thought about this family.

I also hadn't seen that George Birom had also been previously baptised, thanks everyone x
