Who is this and what date?
« on: Tuesday 29 October 24 17:10 GMT (UK) »
A lovely period photo' but alas not in any album  - just a loose photograph with no name or photographer's name on the back - so no clue as to whom this might be more's the pity. It looks early.

Presumed to be a Foord or close family. I wondered whether it might be George Boulden (1805 - 1884) only on the grounds of the distance between his nose and mouth and some of the Boulden family exhibit this trait.

Date anyone?

Does anyone fancy trying to tidy up this photo?

Going by beard style and long clay pipe I would go for 1860's, possibly into early 1870's. Long stemmed pipes were used throughout the 19th century but became less popular after the mid century as the shorter pipes came into fashion. Similarly the chinstrap type beard is more popular mid 1800's . An older gent would probably stick with the style of beard he was used to rather than following the latest styles.

Great photos to have  :)
Does the one with the three gents need to be flipped ?
Just going by the way the waistcoats are fastened.

no no no.
Never flip photos.
The reason is the 2nd. is a copy of an ambrotype.
They are always in reverse.
It's a dating clue.
This one has been dated on a previous post.
I can easily see these being the same chap about 20 or so years apart.
The problem with casual photos like this is you don't get the benefit of
a studio setting which offers a clue as to date.
All there is to go on is the cardstock itself so that's what we need to see + the back if there's
a logo on it.

Thanks Jim. I thought maybe for comparison  of his facial features.
I see the importance of dating.

Sadly the markings on the back of this photo are a complete blank. It's also not in an album so no reference to anyone else.

Again this photo looks of a much earlier style than most of my album picture.

I imagine a photo NOT taken in a studio is more of a rarity.

I *think* this new photo (attached here - also not in studio photo) may be of the same person and I am fairly confident that I have identified the woman in the photo as Elizabeth (nee Giles) Easton. Her husband was David Easton. David Easton is in the early photo at the start of this thread.
