George Chambers - Berwick upon Tweed
« on: Tuesday 29 October 24 08:19 GMT (UK) »
Hi! Can anyone help with the following?

I have a George Chalmers bapt on 25th June 1761 at Peebles, Scotland.

A George Chambers married a lady called Ann and had the following issue at Berwick upon Tweed:

Jean Chambers bapt 6th March 1788

Mary Chambers bapt 7th Nov 1789

Ann Chambers bapt 27th Oct 1791

George Chambers bapt 28th June 1795

A George Chalmers and Ann Henderson are listed as having a son James Chalmers baptised on 11th June 1799 in Edinburgh Parish Scotland. This James is listed as Chambers and living in Berwick upon Tweed in the 1840s and 1850s with two children George and Ann.

Any help with a marriage of George to Ann, or any information on Anns parents greatly appreciated. There are some trees on Ancestry which state her baptism at Edinburgh in 1766 but cannot find any?

Many thanks!! :)

The surname was Chalmers on baptism at Peebles, but the surname was Chambers at Berwick upon Tweed.

Than you :)

How have you determined they are the same person?

Hi! Thank you for your help. No i havent confirmed they are the same person? There are a number of trees on various websites which give the information that i have listed in my search? The only other real information that i have is that George Chambers/Chalmers born in 1761 was a Carpenter by trade in the 1790s.
His son by Ann - George Chambers baptised 1795 Berwick upon Tweed married an Elizabeth Hall at Stamfordham Northumberland and later moved to Gateshead Durham where he died.

A few of the trees list Ann Henderson being baptised in 1766 at Edinburgh though i cannot find the baptism of 1766 as what people say, and there is the son James being baptised there in 1799. This James was listed as James Chambers living in Berwick upon Tweed in the 1840s and 1850s with issue George and Ann.

Thank you once again :)

I did attempt to find a marriage of George Chalmers to Ann in England. I used Soundex on several sites and oddly the name Chambers never appeared despite other alternatives being there.
The same occurred when I used Chambers, Chalmers never appeared.

I did see one tree on Ancestry with his birth as you posted and his wife Ann Henderson. They also noted his abode in 1781 was Gateshead, this was on an Apprenticeship record, George was apprenticed to a Watchmaker, however on the baptisms you mention George Chambers was a Carpenter?

WILLIAM CHALMERS/MARGRET DICKSON
MARGRET 11/05/1756
MARION 2/03/1758
JAMES 12/12/1759
GEORGE 26/06/1761
JEAN 17/07/1763

I note the baptism of James but I also note that there were two other baptisms in Edinburgh, mother Ann. It does posed the question was George married twice, a bit academic as the is no record of George to an Ann.

JAMES CHALMERS 11/06/1799 Edinburgh
GEORGE CHALMERS/ANN HENDERSON

JOHN CHALMERS 24/08/1782 Canongate
GEORGE CHALMERS/ANN GLASGOW

THOMAS CHALMERS 11/10/1784 Canongate
GEORGE CHALMERS/ANN GLASGOW
