Help wanted to track down Sarah Hicheson please - early 1700s
« on: Monday 28 October 24 09:08 GMT (UK) »
Hello.

I'm researching the Wood family from Croxden in Staffordshire, and believe that the George Wood who married Ann Smith at Leek on 25th April 1765 is my 5x Gt Grandfather. I think that Ann's parents were Jeremiah Smith and Sarah Hicheson who married at Leek St Edward on 4th May 1738. I've attached the Register entry from FindMyPast to this post - and "Hicheson" is FindMyPast's take on the spelling of Sarah's surname.

However, I've so far drawn a blank trying to find Sarah's baptism. I had thought the somewhat unusual surname of Hicheson would be easy to trace - but no joy. My current best bet is a Sarah Hixon, baptised at Uttoxeter on 7th August 1708 to parents Thomas and Ann.

I think Jeremiah Smith was baptised on 13th Jan 1714 at Rushton Spencer, so there would have been an age difference of some 6 years between Jeremiah and Sarah at their marriage - if I have indeed found the right couple.

I'd be very grateful to hear the thoughts and suggestions of others on Sarah's baptism - and whether you think the Uttoxeter baptism is likely to be correct - and/or any alternatives you think are worth investigating.

Thanking you in anticipation,
David

Hello hanes teulu and ColC

Simple answer is that I hadn't considered this baptism, mainly because I was trying out various phonetic soundings of the surname, and "Hickson" or "Hixon" seemed to possibly fit the bill. But I like your thinking, especially as Cheddleton is much closer to Leek than Uttoxeter - although I accept that that doesn't really count for that much - people did move around in those days, and there's a long time between baptism and marriage!

That said, I can't find any alternative marriages of a Sarah Hutchinson or a Sarah Hickeson at an appropriate date - so that again adds to the likelihood of this Hutchinson baptism being correct. I'll have to check for early deaths of Sarah Hutchinson of course - and will also see if she had siblings which might give rise to further clues.

Overall, many thanks for both of your helpful suggestions - they've certainly given me further possibilities to investigate.

I was a little concerned that parents of Jerimiah 1714 were Jerimiah & Elizabeth, however perhaps their son was not keen on his name, so he named his own eldest child William, which happens to be the name of his elder brother baptised 1712, Jerimiah & Elizabeth had about 8 children as far as I can see.
Who knows?

Again, many thanks hanes teulu and Colin for your continuing comments.

I'm not going to be able to look at this again until this evening - but I'll certainly pursue your various suggestions  :)

Hi again hanes teulu and Colin.

Well, I've checked and can find nothing to suggest that Sarah Hutchinson may have died before 1738 - nor can I find any other marriage for her. I did find that a Sarah Hutchinsion married an Adderley Burton by licence in Uttoxeter in 1759 - with both stating they were 21 years and upwards (I'm never sure - does this mean they were 21 - or any age over 21? Possibly Sarah in her 40s?). But as I've found a baptism for Adderley in 1735 - making him around 24 at the time of the marriage, I can't really see Sarah being 46. So I'm happy to assume this isn't the Sarah who was baptised in 1713.

I've noted the names of Jeremiah's and Sarah's children - and accept that William, Joseph, Sarah, Ann and Elizabeth all seem to be "family" names - but no conclusive naming pattern as far as I can see.

I've also so far drawn blanks on any suitable Wills that might throw further light on this matter.

All in all I think I have to put Sarah Hutchinson down as a strong contender for my 6x Gt Grandmother - but will have to leave it at that, unless I come across some more conclusive evidence!

Thanks again for your interest and assistance on this matter.

David
