William Andrew(s)
« on: Thursday 24 October 24 14:24 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I’m looking for the death of a William Andrew(s). He was born in Bridgeton in 1871. His parents were Robert and Mary and her maiden name was Hutchison (various spellings). He married Phoebe Langford (Febey on their marriage certificate) in Dalziel in 1895. They had multiple children together. I think he deserted Phoebe at some point around 1904. On his children’s marriage certificate it is said he is deceased but I am unable to find any record. I have also checked burial records for various cemeteries but have had no luck and am wondering if he has went back to Glasgow.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

These are the high probabilty ones showing if he died in Scotland esp: the Daziel and Govan ones i take it that you have checked and ruled these out.

It would appear that Phoebe married again in 1911 to Charles McGinty or McMahon in Dalziel RD Ref 639/ 235. This would suggest that William was already deceased although you would need to look at the cert. for precise details.

( There are a number of in memoriam notices for her in the newspaper archive which refer to her as Phoebe Langford Andrews or McGinty who died 17 Feb 1952).

William

Between 1905 and 1908 Phoebe made several applications for poor relief to Dalziel Parish.

I will briefly run through them.

1905 - Phoebe Langford or Andrews, 24 Baillie's Square Motherwell is added to the Parish Pay Roll.
She has 6 dependants, 4 males and 2 females. She was born in Scotland and is in relief at 3 shillings per week.

6th June 1905. (Name as above) claiming from 302 Borland's Land, Flemington. Her condition is stated as "married & deserted".
She has the following children -
William, 9 years & 11 months. At school.
Hugh, 8 years. At school.
Mary, 6 years. At School.
Richard, 4 years. At home.
Dougal, 2 years. At home.
Janet, 11 months. At home.
Lavina, 8 weeks? At home. (this needs checking)

Her parents are William Langford, a puddler & Mary Ferguson, residing at 9 Baillie's Square.

Applicant states she is the wife of William Andrews, aged 32, a labourer, born in Port Glasgow and presently in desertion.
She has lived at the present address for 2 years. Prior she was at 15 Baillie's Court 2 years. Prior 22 Milton Street 1 year.
6th June 1905 - offered Poorhouse.

5th July 1905.
Same information and states her husband was born in Port Glasgow.
In this claim there is added "Female child born this date 4th Nov 1905 Lavina".
Also in this claim - 10th March 1906 - Entered Poorhouse. 7th June 1906 Left House, struck off.

(So, were there 2 Lavina's? The Scotlandspeople index suggests that there could have been, I think Phoebe had a sister called Lavina who died in childbirth and this Lavina 8 weeks was that child).

22nd June 1906.
Same details, child Lavina is marked as illegitimate.  Phoebe is now residing with her parents at Borland's Land. Her husband is still born in Port Glasgow!
She is offered the Poorhouse 3 times between this date and 3rd August 1906.

1 April 1907.
Claiming from 302 Borland's Land. Husband born Port Glasgow.
All children are listed.
2nd April 1907 - Offered Poorhouse.
26th April 1907 - Children aged 6 and 4 (Richard and Dougal) to be boarded out, subject to two eldest boys being sent to an Industrial School. William aged 11 years & 10 months and Hugh aged 10 years were sent to Ayr Industrial School.

27th April 1908.
Same details, she is now claiming from 99 Shieldmuir Rows. William & Hugh are at the Industrial School. She earns 5 shillings per week cleaning a public house.
Child Lavina aged 2 years 6 months, resides at Globe Buildings.
Husband born Port Glasgow.
28th April - Offered Poorhouse.

1st December 1908.
Same details, at 99 Shieldmuir Rows. Children Mary, Richard & Dougal at school. Daughter Janet at home. Sons William & Hugh in Industrial School. Husband born Port Glasgow. Daughter Lavina Langford, aged 3 years, at Globe Buildings Motherwell. Parents at English Buildings, Shieldmuir.
2nd December 1908 - Offered Poorhouse.
8th January 1909 - Offer to board children out in the country.

Millmoor is correct, Phoebe seems to have married Charles McGinty and she makes a further claim with that name. Her parents both make claims after 1909, her father becoming blind. She is listed in her father's 1st claim and, in the list of children, her son Richard is noted as being a "cripple".

I'm sure the child Lavina must have been the Veenie Langford who was married to Tommy Scott, they lived in Albert Street next to my grandparents and my great-aunt.

Paterson, Torrance, Gilchrist - Hamilton Lanarkshire.
McCallum - Oban, McKechnie - Ross of Mull Argyll.

Binnie - Muiravonside Stirlingshire.
Curran, McCafferty, Stevenson, McCue - Co Donegal
Gibbons, Weldon - Co Mayo.
Devlin - Co Tyrone.
Leonard - County Donegal & Glasgow.

I noted that the Willam Andrew that was born 1871 in Bridgeton. His  parents who married in Bridgeton, 1871 were William ( not Robert) & Mary Hutchison

Hi everyone,

Thank you for your replies.
Hi garngad, yes, I have ruled those ones out.
Hi millmoor, on their marriage certificate it says that Phoebe was a widow but have been unable to locate Williams death certificate.
Hi Lodger, yes there were multiple Lavinias, Phoebe had a Lavina who was born in 1905. Phoebe also had a sister Lavinia who died whilst having her daughter Lavina in 1904.
Hi Kloumann, yes his father was William, I got mixed up.

I have came across William Andrew on someones family tree on ancestry and they say he died on the 27 June 1911, but have been unable to locate the death certificate. I have reached out to the person whos family tree it is, but have received no reply. It states that he was buried in Clarkston Cemetery in Airdrie, and was just wondering if anyone could confirm that this was him.

Thanks
