William Sainsbury - can't trace beyond 1886
« on: Tuesday 22 October 24 14:55 BST (UK) »
I have been looking for any details on my ancestor William Sainsbury (b. 1st May 1858 - Grateley (Kimpton) Hampshire, England) beyond 1886. I know he joined the navy when he was 15 years old but seems to have left in 1886. I have found him in the 1861, 1871 (in Sussex living with an uncle) and 1881 census but I can't find him in the 1891 census or beyond. No marriage, no death. Can anyone help?
Thanks
Liz

He was in the Royal Navy on the vessel - Euphrates. He was a stoker, I think.

I can't find him on the 1891 census and according to his records he was last on a vessel in the Royal Navy in 1886. After that - nothing.

Seems to have been sentenced to 42 days in the military prison Malta 18.4.1886 - 2.6.1886 but had various stays in the cells prior to that

Yes - I noticed that on his naval record but I think he was in gaol 11.12.1885 for 40 days in Malta - so he would have left in early 1886. He later left the navy on 2 June 1886 as he had served his 10 years. But he certainly was in gaol quite a lot!

Could be a possibility. Shame there's no death!
