Help finding the parents of Margaret Grieve
« on: Monday 21 October 24 12:01 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I am struggling to progress my Scottish Grieve line.

John Delver Wilson married Margaret Grieve in Edinburgh - 22/12/1828 the marriage listing does not give the details of the parents. It also doesn't give their ages.

I tracked the family on the census to London. The children are:
Joseph Wilson B c1829-1833 based on military record in Edinburgh. I can't find his birth record, but I have his child's Gibraltar baptism record which lists the name of her grandparents (Joseph's parents )  as John Delver Wilson and Margaret Grieve and confirms his place of birth as Scotland, the military record states Edinburgh.

James Grieve Wilson b1832 St James, Westminster

John Delver Wilson b1836 St James, Westminster

Margaret Sophia b1836 St James, Westminster

Isabella Jane Delver Wilson b 1840 - d1841 St James, Westminster

William John Delver Wilson b1843 - d1843 St James, Westminster

Following them on the census I have found:

1841 Living together in St James, Westminster - Margaret born approx. 1811 in Scotland
1851 Living together in St James, Westminster - Margaret born approx. 1806 in Scotland
1852 John Delver Wilson dies.
1861 Can't find Margaret
1871 Can't find Margaret
1881 Potentially found her living with daughter Margaret Sophia Wilson, in St Giles In the Fields, London b approx. 1804 Paisley, Scotland.

Not knowing Margaret's parents name, having an approx. birth range from 1804-1811 and knowing she was in Edinburgh in 1828 and may have been born in Paisley is leaving me feeling a bit stumped on how to find her birth and progress my tree.

Can anyone help track down the missing census to hopefully firm up date or place of birth or suggest other ways to try to confirm her parents?

Many Thanks

 :)

1841 Living together in St James, Westminster - Margaret born approx. 1811 in Scotland
1851 Living together in St James, Westminster - Margaret born approx. 1806 in Scotland
Don't forget that adults' ages in 1841 were supposed to be rounded down to the nearest 5 years. Margaret is recorded as 30, which means she could actually have been 34, born in 1806/1807.

In 1851 she was recorded as 45, which means a birth in 1805/1806.

Because of the way the census dates fall, the two ages are still incompatible with one another, but I think she may have been born nearer 1806 than 1811.

No, I don't suppose that's all that useful, really.

I see that she named her first son James Grieve. That leads me to wonder if her father's name was likely to be James?

There is a baptism of Margaret, daughter of James Grieve and Helen Murdoch, in Cullen in 1807, and there is no obvious record of the death of a Margaret Grieve, mother's maiden surname Murdoch, though at least two and possibly three of her siblings died in Scotland after 1855.

On the other hand Cullen is a long way from both Edinburgh and Paisley.

What were the names of John Delver Wilson's parents?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thank you for providing your thoughts they have been helpful.  :)

John Delver Wilson was born 1797, London his parents were Joseph Wilson and Jane.

This gives support to them following naming convention . Even though I haven't been able to find the birth registration I believe Joseph Wilson is John and Margaret's first son as he was born in Edinburgh then the subsequent children are born in London. I believe that James Grieve Wilson is their second son.
