Finding Beatrice

Hello everyone.

I am hoping someone can help me. I have found out my grandad had a sister we had no idea about. Her name was Beatrice Genevieve Round.  She was born in 1887 to Samuel and Beatrice Round.

Sadly he father, a professor of music,  passed away in 1898 aged 32. The 1901 census shows her living at 16 Norland Square in kensington. Part of the address reads like its an orphanage? Society of musicians.

I would love to know why she was there when she had a mother and 1 sister and 3 brothers. Can anyone suggest where I might get some joy in finding answers

I would say, it was simply a case of the mother needing help to support her children, after the loss of her husband’s income
Beatrice Genevieve was the oldest and was able to be schooled, clothed and fed by the Society of Musicians.
The alternative for the child might have been sent into domestic service at the age of 12.  :'(
I see by 1911 census, the mother is now working and earning her own income.

Looks to have married a Frank Norton and become Beatrice Genevieve Norton in 1908. Died in 1971. One daughter and two sons.

Not seeing a Kathleen. Free BMD has these likely births in 1911, 1913 & 1914 :

Norton    Phyllis L    Round    Gloucester    

Norton    Sydney E    Round    Chipping N.   

Norton    John D            Round    Chipping N.   

Of these, Sydney and Phyllis appear to be at home with Frank and Beatrice in 1939, along with Phyllis' husband, a Donald Goldsmith Johnson.
