Laurie / Lourie/Lowrie Family- Victoria
« on: Monday 14 October 24 02:15 BST (UK) »
Hello fellow Family Researchers

My maternal G G Grandparents were Jonathan Laurie and Eliza Carrick (1860-1919). They had at least one child, my GG Mother, Annie (1872- 1923), born in Streatham, Victoria. The documents I have been able to research have the family name listed variously as Laurie, Lowrie and Lourie. I suspect the origin may be Irish, but eqully could be Scottish. Sometimes the written transcripts are hard to distinguish the actual letters, and I suspect the spelling was due to the actual government official taking the notation, no doubt a familiar story!  I do remember my late mother referring to her Grandmother as "Annie Laurie just like the song", so have always stuck (rightly or not) with that spelling.

Can anyone assist with: The origin of the name and therefore the "correct" spelling and any information about Jonathan and his origins.  I have a separate thread request for info about Eliza Carrick and her family, but all help, no matter how small, would be greatly appreciated.

I believe the name to be Scottish in origin.
There are numerous variations of the spelling - Lawrie, Lowrie, Lawry, Laurie, Lorrie, Laury, Lowery, Lawry.

There is no such thing as a "correct" spelling. Standardised spelling is a modern notion.

You need to look at marriage records, immigration records, birth certificates of children to obtain as much information about Jonathan, his father's name, his birth place, etc, as possible.
If you already have this information, then you would have to be willing to post it here, so others may be able to help.

If Eliza was born in 1860, did she really have a child in 1872 at the age of 12?

Eliza obviously had numerous children. What information do their various birth certificates give about parents age, birth place, occupation, etc.

Thank you for responding. Yes, I was aware of some of the different spelling, which makes verifying information that much more difficult.  I agree that standardisation has come about with a general increase in overall literacy.

I do appreciate your guidance that the name is  most likely of Scottish origin.
