Seaman/Fireman Arthur Yates
« on: Saturday 12 October 24 02:33 BST (UK) »
I have just discovered my great x 3 uncle, Arthur Yates, born in Gringley on the Hill in Nottinghamshire served from 1890 in the Royal Navy. I know nothing about the navy so dont know where really to start. I have a list of ships he served on from document number 154657 on the uk Royal Navy register and that is it. Would anyone be prepared to give me some pointers?

I have had great satisfaction following shipping via the newspapers.

Eg. Here is H.M.S. Asia in June 1890

Thank you, the National Archives seemto be the same page as on Ancestry. However i can’t find anything else, any other records of his sea life.

Arthur Yates signed on for a 12 year engagement in the Royal Navy on 6 May 1890.
He completed 8 years of that engagement before going on the 'Run' at Halifax on 15 September 1898 from the battleship HMS RENOWN

And that would explain why there are no further records of him. So would this be common for crew to disappear and never return at some ports?

Arthur's service record covers up to 15 Sept 1898 and says he left at Halifax. The Journal of Commerce published 20 Sept 1898 confirms that HMS Renown left Halifax for Quebec on 17 Sept, but that 'Halifax' is listed under Foreign Ports. So are we saying he did a runner in Halifax, Nova Scotia?

Yes that's correct - its Halifax N.S.
If a deserter was eventually caught and returned to service, their record would reflect this as well so unless there is missing pages on the record we must assume he was never returned to service.
