NZ BDM
« on: Friday 11 October 24 02:39 BST (UK) »
Hi all.

I have over the last few months I requested copies of the original birth entries for three of my relatives, 1918, 1919/20 and 1926, however I received typed written ones, which of course does not necessarily give us all the information, and in these cases there is not doubt interesting and relative information.

I contacted BDM and this is their reply. Has anyone had this experience and have any idea what possible information could or had to be redacted?
Thanks
Sue

....We have received your query regarding why you received two typed printouts rather than the original handwritten entries. I will address this below:

Legislation has been passed since the event (birth) was registered that deleted certain information collected at the time of the registration. This means the record must be updated into the typed format with the deleted information removed.

It is understandable that you may like to know what was deleted, however it is not possible for us to advise of what was removed. The effect of the legislation is that certain information must be treated as though it was never registered, so it would be contrary to that intention to distribute the information. The typed printout contains all of the information from the original record other than that deleted by legislation.

I hope this clarifies things for you.

110 Any reference to "“illegitimate”" deemed to be deleted

(1)

All entries in any register made under section 25 of the Births and Deaths Registration Act 1924 or the corresponding provision of a former Act are deemed to be expunged and deleted.

(2)

The Registrar-General must ensure that any reference to the word “illegitimate” (or any equivalent expression) is deleted from any information or printout provided or made available under section 92 or 97(3).

(3)

This section is subject to section 94 (which permits electronic access to pre-1998 registers containing original historical information).

Hi, yes they were all illegitimate, and no it does not state that on their certs, just father NR so I knew they were illegitimate.  So I guess this is the reason and I assume from now on any certificate that has "illegitimate" on it will be in the form of a typed version.

Thanks everyone, it clears up my query.
