Wegberg Military hospital 1980
« on: Thursday 10 October 24 17:08 BST (UK) »
Good afternoon all,
I wonder if anyone cant point me in the right direction, I am searching for a friend for the birth of her son while her husband was serving in the army at RAF Wegberg Germany  the date was Sep 1980. I have been given the details of the names and dates of  parents and child, but my friend is looking to get a birth certificate for her son who was stillborn at the hospital, she has no birth certificate for him and is trying to find out where to apply to see if she can obtain, just as you can now do in the UK but so far she is having not luck,
Any suggestions as to where to look  would be very much appreciated
thank you
and
Kind Regards

I am afraid that the Hospital is long gone and I suspect so are the records.  I can only suggest contacting the RAF but frankly I would not get ones hope up after all this time.

For the child of a British serviceman, born in Germany, there are two avenues to explore for birth registrations: the UK GRO births abroad records and local German registration. It's very possible that neither would record a stillbirth, but the event might have been registered with the local German authority as a death.

Thank you, yes she said that there was a post mortem and they have results with some information but no birth death certificate given, surely the post mortem would have been on record?

You can also try and contact the local townhall, most of the time I found them very helpful, when I asked them for there help, in my cas relating to WOII.

This page says only a death would be registered in the case of a still birth. Note, in 1980 a stillborn child weighing less than 500g (1.1 lbs)would not have been registered. The law  in Germany has now changed after bereaved parents protested.

You would need to write to the local Standesamt for a death certificate .

Standesamt Wegberg
Rathausplatz 25
41844 Wegberg
Tel.: 02434 83-341, 83-343 und 83-344 oder
standesamt@stadt.wegberg.de

The request for the birth or death certificate should be done in writing and contain as much information as possible, including proof of your identity and your legal right to obtain the document.

I also found this in the National UK archives, but not sure if a baptism would have occurred
