Software GEDCOM Compatability Tests
« on: Thursday 03 October 24 12:01 BST (UK) »
Morning All,

Not sure which board to post this in so I hope anyone reading this could help.

A while a go I stumbled across a website that gave quite detailed information about Genealogy programs compatability with importing and exporting GEDCOM files from tests they had carried out.

Yes, you guessed it, I did not make a note or bookmark the site and can't seem to find it any more  ???

If anyone knows of the site could you post a link here please  :)

Thank You

Hi,

No, not quite.

There was a table of several programs with details of how accurate a GEDCOM had been imported and what errors there had been with handling certain tags and then what the Export of a GEDCOM was like compared to the ' standard ' so it picked up the programs different ways of handling their ' unique ' features of their software.

Could it be Family Tree Maker? I upgraded an ancient copy I had thanks to advice recently from a Rootschat member and it has a really good check list for importing a gedcom and you can add, reject or merge items/facts etc and people before finalising the import.

That sounds like one of the comparison checks done by one of the magazines in their heyday. Unfortunately most of them are no longer published and checking those still with us draws a blank.

Hi, F1fan.

I think what you're looking for is a series of articles by Keith Riggle on GenealogyTools.com, called
"Family Tree Software Alternatives".

The first one is here: https://genealogytools.com/replacing-family-tree-maker-part-1-how-to-scrub-your-data/
and the rest are listed (with links) after this first article but before people's comments on the article.

Hi McGroger,

Although that is not the one :-[ That looks like a good read and thank you as it had not come up in any of my searches.

The one I remember had a table that showed how many GEDCOM entries are in the test file and then how many had been imported correctly in each program tested and then gave an accuracy %. It then went on to list the errors very similar to the article you have linked to.

Thank you all and I know better next time, bookmark anything that you think is interesting and of use  ;)

Probably not exactly the same thing as the table you mention but this chart summing up Keith Riggle's findings in his articles might be useful:
https://genealogytools.com/family-tree-maker-to-gedcom-to-other-apps-crosswalk/
You have to click on the chart to open it to full size and scroll sideways to see all the apps tested.

Anyway, hope you find the one you're looking for. If so please let us know. Just a final thought: Keith several times mentions a series of blogs by Tamura Jones. I've read a few of that person's articles and can't recall seeing anything like you mention but he might also be worth checking out, at https://tamurajones.net/

Cheers,
Peter

Unless you've cleared your browser history, its URL should still be there.
