Only evidence i have is here say from his granddaughter and very little is known, so will have to ask some more questions.  I  can understand he might well have been exempt, and she just remembers him in a uniform. Thanks.

How could his granddaughter have seen him in uniform in WWI?  Do you mean a photograph?

Debra  :)

As i understand, she was very young and was a photograph but not in her possession, which might well have been a railway uniform. Very little details really. Thanks.

I would agree with the others that he didn't serve overseas but
may have served at home.
The only way to know for sure would mean buying a birth cert.
for one of his children.
Shunters didn't wear uniforms however I notice in 1939 he's a railway guard
who did so this is how she probably remembers him.

Photo here is of Bertie

If you apply for the Birth Certificate of Bertie's Son - Arthur George Margrave December Quarter 1918 West Ham Vol 4a page 116  Mother's Maiden Name = Pratt
I bet you'll find the Occupation of the Baby's Father won't be "Soldier" but rather "Railway Shunter "

There is an Ancestry Tree that has Arthur George Margrave born 9 October 1918 in Army Uniform in WW2

Gosh she will be so pleased with that, I am not on any of the  payment Ancestry websites now as its becoming very expensive, but might well make a trip to the library. Many thanks for your help, pretty sure all has come together with the uniform etc. Kind regards Tony.
