James Cox / McCann b. 1842
« on: Friday 27 September 24 20:38 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I need some help regarding what happened to James McCann, born 1842 in Ireland. He was the son of John McCann (labourer) and Rose Ann Duffy.

Rose Ann was previously married to a Terrance Cox and they had (that I know of), Mary, Catherine, Francis & John. Mary was married to John Leonard in 1855 which states her place of birth as Fermanagh, so it’s possible James was born here too. They family were in Fermanagh at least until 1844, but in Lanarkshire by 1849 (Catherine married Patrick Green at Fermanagh in Sep 1844, but had a son born at Tollcross in 1849).

In 1861 James is living at 9 Society Street, Calton under the surname Cox with his mother “Rosa Cox”, sister Mary and her two sons, John & James Leonard (listed as “Howard”). Catherine is living at 26 Society Street, widowed. No traces of Francis until 1871.

James married Margaret Chalmers on 23 Sep 1861 at Bridgeton. Abode; Coalhill Street, and occupation a carter. His father John McCann is listed as deceased. They had a daughter Mary born 13 Feb 1863 at Gallowgate. His wife Margaret died aged 16-18, 16 May 1863 at  577 Gallowgate. And that is the last I see of James.

In the 1871 census Mary McCann (“McAnn”) is living with her grandmother at Coalhill Street. Rose Ann died in 1878, son Francis being the informant.

Many thanks  :)

I had thought this was him too, however the marriage record showed his parents were Michael McCann and Ann McEnemy.  :-\

May have found him in a familysearch tree / baptism? Details are still a bit off but given the names I think it’s linked (even if not him). Or just a very big coincidence.

Baptism of Rose A McCann dau of James McCann and Catherine Duffy. Born 17 Feb 1868 and baptised 20 Feb in Gorbals.

Family search tree has;
James McCallum and Catherine Duffy
- Bridget McCallum b. 31 Mar 1861 Tradeston
- Agnes McCallum b. 12 Apr 1863
- Rose Ann Duffy McCallum b. 17 Feb 1868
- Catherine McCallum b. 22 Oct 1870
- Margaret Chalmers McCallum b. 10 Jan 1874
All children born in Tradeston.

The years are off for Bridget / Agnes in perspective. But Rose Ann Duffy is the name of James’ mother, and Margaret Chalmers his first wife. ???

Also for his brother Francis, the sponsors for his daughter Mary’s baptism in 1869 is a “Kate McCann”

Quite the coincidence! Thank you for checking that. At least that James can be ruled out for certain  :)

I’ve managed to get a breakthrough with James’ daughter Mary.

24 Feb 1881 at Tylefield Street, Mary McCann (18)  abode 402 Gallowgate, dau of James McCann (Carter) and Margaret Chalmers (deceased) married to William Wilson (18) of 402 Gallowgate, son of William Wilson & Ellen Campbell.

Witnesses Edward Reilly & Ellen Wilson.

Still no sign of James, but he’s not marked deceased so must be out there  ??? Given Mary was born at Gallowgate & lived there 18 years on he might’ve stayed in the area.
