1816 will - 2 words please
« on: Friday 27 September 24 15:52 BST (UK) »
These are two snippets from an 1816 Yorkshire will. Can anyone please read  [1] the name in the first snippet - I make it possibly John Apward? [2] the word between 'my Estate' and 'and Interest' in the second snippet - could it be Sum?

Many thanks.

I've tried tweaking the image a little and I agree, it might be Apward.

It looks like a description of a piece of land bounded by the lands of John A. Which parish was it in? - it might be possible to find the name in the tithe records.

Thank you very much both.

The parish was Kirbymoorside. The full description of plot of land is:
Copyhold Land containing by admeasurement five acres two roods and fifteen perches situate on the said Sleights Common within the Manor of Kirbymoorside aforesaid adjoining on the Lands of John Apward? towards the East the Lands now or late of John Backet towards the West and the Sleights Road towards the North and of Stoneley Wood Road towards the South

The will is of William Sturdy written 1816 proved 1817.

ADDED: Is it only The Genealogist website [subscription] who have tithe maps?

ADDED 2: Sleights Common is on this map

Yes, I think it is just The Genealogist that has these. However, they date from around 20 years later, and I couldn't see any similar names. I've also just had a brief look in the PRs and not seen anything likely.

Thanks for that. I did a wildcard search too in parish records for a surname of A*ward - there are a lot of capital 'A''s in the text - but all that came up was 'Aylward' which it can't be as no 'l' upstroke. 'Apward' may have to stay as a possibility; I'll put a note on the transcription.

A follow up - after research into local records and maps the name in the first snipper is YOWARD. So all resolved thank you.
